spring cleaning

spring cleaning

*

this spring, i’m cleaning up my act by upgrading some of the products i use to keep my body, skin, and hair fresh and happy. it’s nice to be nice to yourself and while i love the feeling of being scrubbed completely clean, it’s not always the best thing for my body. a lot of products with harsh cleansers are rough on skin, we know that over-shampooing is awful for your hair, and that the chemicals in many cleansers and removers can do more harm than good. i’m not the most obsessed with avoiding these things entirely, but i’ve found that making little changes are not only beneficial, but sometimes the gentler products work even better.

simple eye makeup remover, $6.99: i tend to scrub my eyes when i wash my face to get rid of the primer, shadow, and mascara that i wear daily. after i rubbed them raw a couple of weeks ago, i vowed to add a gentle eye makeup remover to my bedtime routine. i like simple’s version because it’s not at all oily or greasy and it’s free of dyes, perfumes, and irritants.

josie maran bear naked nail wipes, $9: my nails and cuticles are always left so dry after a run with typical polish remover. infused with argan oil, these nail wipes from josie maran leave my nails in perfect condition with no need for extra hydration. one pad cleans all ten nails and I’m left with the feeling that they are naturally nourished.

dr. sponge facial cleaning sponge, $8.50: these natural and biodegradable facial cleansing sponges are the coolest! coming in eight varieties to suit all skin types, they mildly exfoliate, leaving skin clean and fresh. the best part is that after you use it, you can squeeze the water out and use it to actually dry your face so there is no towel needed.

you smell paper hand soap, 3 for $8.75 (75 washes!): the hand soap in public bathrooms really grosses me out. as an aesthetically pleasing (and fun!) alternative, you smell paper hand soap requires just a few drops of water to magically transform into a perfect lather. hands are left smelling like fresh laundry and each pack is small enough to pack inside the smallest clutch.

marvis mouthwash concentrate, $22.50: my husband and i are big fans of a morning swish and we both love contemporary toothpaste brand, marvis. when they launched their new mouthwash concentrate, i know we’d love it. just like their toothpastes, this alcohol-free mouthwash is freshly innovative and it leaves my mouth with long-lasting peppermint taste.

lush no drought dry shampoo, $13.95: i have to wash my hair every other day and that’s only if I douse it in dry shampoo on day two. this version from lush absorbs excess oil and volumizes, but fresh ingredients make me feel a bit better about massaging it into my scalp.

i haven’t seen the likes of the easter bunny in well over a decade, but if his hippity hop highness were to pay me a visit i would love to see these treats hidden inside my basket – or, better yet, tucked into this holographic bag from sephora.

dr. hauschka eye shadow trio, $40
deborah lippmann rockin’ robin, $19
bobbi brown lilac rose shimmer brick, $42
mark. stack and style rings, $18
smith’s minted rose lip balm tube, $6
sephora the perfectionist makeup sponge, $12

happy easter sunday to you!

best in beauty: spring 2013

spring beauty favorites

the beauty brands are coming out big for their spring 2013 launches and i am loving everything that I see. here are my picks for the best products from the spring 2013 collections:

paul & joe limited edition eye color in la belle epoque is perfectly pretty. shades of powdery pink and smoky gray mean that you’ll easily stay on trend this season. ($28, beautyhabit)

lancome nailed the blush trend this season. their “in love” blush for spring 2013 is a mix of pinks that presents the most gorgeous feminine flush. the brand also wins prettiest package with the added bonus of a slide out mirror. ($49, lancome)

deborah lippmann’s moon rendezvous nail lacquer gives a flash of metallic that’s perfect for day or night. since the color is on the pale side, you’ll be sweetly in line with spring’s pastel palette. ($17, nordstrom)

simple protecting light moisturizer isn’t heavy and it offers just the right amount of hydration as we head into the warmer months. i love the addition of spf15. ($10.99, amazon)

i’m getting my punk rock princess on with juicy couture’s new couture la la. talk about unexpected! this scent is all things girly, light, and sweet. ($70, nordstrom)

nars’ dressed to kill satin lipstick will go with many skin tones, and the gold-flecked fuchsia is just right for valentine’s day. get a bold rosebud lip from this tried and true formula – it’s definitely a shade you’ll wear for seasons to come. ($24, nars)

simple’s eye make up remover pads are a welcome addition to my beauty routine. i really feel like the market has been missing a disposable eye makeup remover wipe that’s easy on sensitive skin. these are sized right and impressively effective for removing all of spring’s eye makeup (including waterproof mascara) in one swipe. ($5.00, amazon)

i’m in nyc for another week of trade show fun and, as often as i do it, i like to think i’ve perfected the art of beauty travel. these are just a few things that make toting my makeup a more pleasurable experience and a couple of little luxuries that keep me calm and looking put together while i’m away from home:

brush protectors, $8 – these mesh sleeves help my makeup brushes to keep their shape and also protect them from harmful bacteria. they’re reusable and they come in all the right sizes.

pencil case, $33 – perfect for keeping lip products in check. stephanie’s sumatra print never fails to put a smile on my face!

small cosmetic, $38 – just the right size to hold my daily routine. i can easily throw it in my suitcase or in my purse for when i need the essentials handy.

la fresh beauty wipes, $5.25 – makeup remover, face cleanser, polish remover, body soother and hand sanitizer: everything you need in small, disposable doses.

bobbi brown empties, $15 – i can fit five days worth of product into these baby bottles. best of all? no leaks!

body wash caps, $0.80 – single use capsules in fourteen scents, now why didn’t I think of that?

this works deep sleep stress less, $22 – an aromatherapy blend that promotes restful sleep. a godsend for anyone who doesn’t get the best rest away from home.

do you have anything that makes traveling a little easier?

golden globes beauties

golden globes beauties

i love to go beauty gazing on the red carpet from my couch. while the awards for best of the year in tv and film were being doled out, i was hard at work whittling down my choices for best nails, hair, lip, lashes, brow, and best everything.

  • hands down: best nails went to zooey deschanel. the nail art queen did not disappoint with her tiny tv cameras and vintage film strips. (details here!)
  • tangerine tango: the lip on jessica alba created quite a stir! the color is hourglass cosmetics’ opaque rouge liquid lipstick in riviera.
  • shocking choice: i thought the best hair was jessica chastain’s. everyone hated it, but i thought the pulled back look set in waves really accentuated the actress’ gorgeous fiery red shade and her pretty facial features.
  • arch enemy: isla fisher gave me major brow envy, but i really was pretty in love with her entire beauty look. the side part, the berry lip, well done.
  • lush lashes: oh! the flutter fringe on rosie huntington whitely – so gorgeous. celeb makeup artist fiona stiles achieved the look using mark lash all you want high volume mascara.
  • best everything: anne hathaway’s beauty look was a vision. i’m still obsessed with her pixie and her whole face was completely flawless.
