love day loves

*
a day that celebrates love of all kinds is definitely something that i can get behind. while i tend to think that valentine’s day can be a bit overdone, i just can’t help but support a holiday that encourages chocolate and kissing. it also brings out my inner girly girl in a big way and this year i’m craving all kinds of pretty things to help me celebrate in style.

1 – festive nonpareils (my most favorite candy) in a decadent dark
chocolate heart from edward marc chocolatier, $10

2 – five sweet, soft and stretchy hair ties from mane message, $7.40

3 – techno bubblegum nails by deborah lippmann, $18

4 – a gorgeous springtime glow in the prettiest powder blush from mark., $14

5 – a sparkling, flapper-inspired fragrance bursting with spirit from tocca, $20

6 – punchy pink peony lips that are nourished and non-sticky from jouer, $20

7 – a chic + cheery mini pouch in gold + coral from stephanie johnson, $33

my ten favorite product finds of 2013

it’s been a very good year for the glossarie and the growth of my beauty bag and makeup routine is further proof of all the wonderful products that i was introduced to in 2013. ten products have become everyday, you-will-have-to-pry-them-out-of-my-cold-dead-hands favorites. these are the bars against which all other products in their category are measured. so without further ado, here are the best of the best:

top 10 of 2013

*

1 – chapstick hydration lock

2 -stila countless color pigment in lyric

3 – mark. make it rich lip crayon – how these never made it into their own post,
i will never know! coverage is creamy and intense, super comfortable and long-wearing. peony is my winter shade of choice, with punch being my year-round go-to.

4 – maybelline volum’express the falsies big eyes

5 – smashbox camera ready cc cream

6 – bite lush lip tint in orchard – another product that snuck into the top 10 without a post. this glossy, moisturizing, hot pink is the one thing that wakes me up each
morning. i’m obsessed with the formula and the color is so poppy and fresh.

7 – benefit gimme brow

8 – my partnership with simple skincare in 2013 was a true blessing for my problem skin! i have fallen in love with every product in the range and i love the calm, clear effects
that each one delivers with no surprises as to how my skin will react.

9 – real techniques expert face brush

10 – jouer perfume oil

is there something that you discovered via the glossarie
that’s still holding steady in your daily beauty routine?

i found myself faced with too many amazing products to count this week (always a good problem) so i’m sharing a handful of bite-sized reviews. as always, let me know if you want more : )

dermablend skinperfector blemish and oil clearing primer, $45
summer always means more breakouts for me, but i’ve been combatting the dreaded acne flare up with this primer from dermablend. it goes on light, like a lotion, but it dries perfectly matte, stopping shine dead in its tracks – even when the “feels like” is 107.

real techniques expert face brush, $8.99
seriously where have these brushes been hiding? this one applies bb/cc creams and liquid foundations like a dream and i have not seen one hair out of place. the finished effects are pixel perfect, giving this spendier option a run for its money.

jouer lip sheer spf 15 in santorini, $22
these little lippies are gorgeous and this new rosy pink shade is a creamier counterpart to my favorite from the fall. santorini is the perfect finishing touch to an everyday makeup look, leaving lips flawlessly pink, extra soft, and protected from the summer sun.

lumene time freeze eye perfecting treatment, $15.99
now this is really brilliant. i could kiss whoever thought to pair an eye treatment with a flexible lip gloss applicator! this cooling, fine-line reducing gel is actually fun to apply each night before bed – and the firming / de-puffing effects aren’t bad either!

maybelline volum’express the falsies big eyes, $9.49
i adore this dual ended mascara. with two formulas and brush sizes to separately address your top and bottom lashes, this guy gives excellent volume. it doesn’t smudge or flake and it lifts my lashes up and out, rivaling its beauty counter competitors.

summer scent stars

summer scent stars

i am getting more and more into fragrance every day. my vanity tray has gone from housing one signature scent to a full on wardrobe of beautiful vials and glass bottles, making for a very difficult choice each morning. just like skincare, i find that i switch my scent game up when the weather turns warmer. heavier florals are replaced with tropical inspired top notes and and loveliest of fresh smelling oils. from left to right, here are my top picks for summer scents:

une nuit a bali – the travel perfume, $60
grapefruit, vanilla and indian jasmine keep this gorgeous fragrance on the lighter side. it falls somewhere between a perfume and a body mist so you can spray through the day if the heat has you feeling less than fresh – or just aching for an island getaway.

tokyo milk arsenic eau de parfum spray, $36
fennel, absinthe, and sea salt make this unexpected scent from tokyo milk an exotic choice. somehow it all works together and i promise this one will evoke countless inquiries of “what are you wearing?”. it’s spicy, but fresh, almost androgynous and all kinds of sexy.

jouer cosmetics perfume oil, $42
jouer’s fresh and feminine rollerball is my current go-to. i can’t get enough of the fragrant bursts of gardenia and honeysuckle and the tiny size makes it super easy to travel with. i roll a bit into the crook of each elbow in the mornings and enjoy uplifting whiffs all day long.

nomaterra miami eau de parfum refillable travel spray, $86
if you haven’t smelled nomaterra’s fragrances yet, you’re missing out. miami is the to-die-for scent of summer with smells of melon, coconut, orange blossom, and pink pepper. it’s a fruity floral with a beachy garden vibe that’s truly unique.

amazonian wild lily perfume oil, $12
husband’s choice, this pretty floral is crisp and rain-kissed. ranging somewhere between a true oil and almost a scented water, the subtle scent lasts all day long. if you were/are a fan of the body shop’s perfume oils, this one does not disappoint!

is there a scent that you can’t get enough of this summer?

a few favorites

a few favorites

it’s been one of those weeks where the winning beauty discoveries just did not stop coming and i’ve been pulling these five products out of my beauty basket almost daily since i brought them in to the glossarie test lab.

physicians formula mineral airbrushing blush spf 30, $10.79
the perfect pink in a smooth, easy-to-wear formula that also packs spf 30. this gorgeously packaged blush is so summer-right, i can’t even stand it. (and if that doesn’t sell you, there’s the cutest ever mini kabuki brush hiding underneath the blush pan!)

topshop brow pencil, $12
i am still letting my brows grow in a bit (it’s painful) and this pencil has been a godsend. the spoolie brush is substantial enough to tame my unruly arches and the pencil formula is so creamy. it’s easy to blend and impossible to overdo.

jouer pearl lip enhancer in rose, $16
jouer’s classic lip enhancer is ultra moisturizing and these new tinted versions are just as soothing. the rose pearl shade is the ultimate glossy nude and it’s been polishing off my everyday face with just the right touch of color and shine.

21 drops 10 calm essential oil rollerball, $29
confession: i’m not the most relaxed person and i hate to fly. this essential oil saved me on a recent flight and i’ve kept it close ever since. a couple of drops in the palm of my hands, cupped over my face, and a deep breath in – all is right with the world.

dr. lewinn by kinerase instant perfecting b.b. cream, $15.97
a complete surprise, this bb cream blends beautifully and blurs away imperfections. it’s hydrating, but very lightweight and includes spf (both very important for dc’s ugly summer weather). my skin looks bright and glowy and it feels like i’ve got nothing on.

show me your lip bomb, tierney

Tierney Lip Bomb

name: tierney
internet home: the preppy leopard
number of products: 5
she says: my lip bomb is nowhere near as fancy as yours (*oh please!), but here’s the pic!
the bomb:

maybelline colorsensational lip color in red revival, $7.49
such a great take on the classic red lip.
it’s a little darker than my normal red lipsticks
*
mac matte lipstick in diva, $15
a dark dark wine color that seems intimidating in the tube, but is really pretty on.
i love wearing it with smoky eyes–instead of being 1980′s overwhelming,
it’s actually very sultry and vampy.
*
chapstick moisturizer, $1.59
i honestly can’t beat a $2 tube of chapstick.
plus, I don’t feel guilty when I lose it.
*
nyx pump it up lip plumper, $5.49
bought on a whim from UO.  it’s a pretty gloss,
but i don’t really believe in lip plumpers.
*
jouer lip enhancer conditioning lip treatment, $14
it feels so nice when I put it on, but i don’t think
i’ll buy the full price one when my chapstick is so darn amazing.
**
tierney and i have been blog friends for the longest. i wish we got to hang out in person more often as our love for beauty products (lips, in particular) always sparks insightful convo. her lip bomb says a lot about her and i could not be more appreciative of her thoughts on each product – plus, most of these are new names for the #lipbomb project, which is fun to see.

on my lips: january 2013

there is no shortage of crazy good new lip products on the market and six of them make up my january rotation. here’s the latest rundown of what’s on my lips, top to bottom:

clinique chubby stick intense in roomiest rose, $16
bite beauty lush lip tint in orchard, $24
covergirl lip perfection jumbo gloss balm in rose twist, $6.64
maybelline baby lips in melon mania (new limited edition shade), $3
tarte lipsurgence skintuitive lip tint, $24
jouer spf15 lip sheer in positano, $22

what’s new and exciting in your lip wardrobe?

show me your lip bomb, sharona

sharona lip bomb

name: sharona
she says: love this project! here’s what I carry – so many!! if you haven’t tried the c.o. bigelow, i highly recommend it!!
number of products: 7
the bomb:

c.o. bigelow my favorite lip balm, $7.50
aquaphor healing ointment, 2 for $5.99
jouer lip enhancer, $14
fresh sugar mini
pangea organics pyrenees lavendar with cardamom lip balm, $12
stila lip glaze in lights (from this trio)
tarte lipsurgence natural lip tint in joy, $24

reader #lipbombs are my favorite! don’t get me wrong, blogger bombs are great, but there’s something about seeing how an average jane spends her hard earned money on beauty. sharona is a great example of how to invest in some quality staples – plus i’m totally falling victim to her c.o. bigelow endorsement!

november bag + balm

november bag + balm

bag: hobo alex cosmetic, $88 – $98
balm: jouer spf 15 lip sheer in st. barths, $22

what can i say, i’m going a little luxe with this month’s bag and balm. my beloved leather bag brand (and favorite employer, full disclosure here) has added the most darling cosmetic clutch to the line this holiday season. hobo’s alex is a slim silhouette with a side kiss-lock closure for extra quirk and tucked inside is the teeniest of mirrors, ideal for lipstick checks. the bag is skinny but sizable with plenty of room for your best lip products and whatever else your touch up kit requires. alex comes in two vintage leathers and two spunky holiday prints (shown in mosaic). it’s the ultimate little luxury.

in balm land, i’m seriously digging jouer’s spf 15 lip sheer in st. barths. it may be slightly summer-esque, but the orange coral is super sheer and brings the perfect juicy pop to my no makeup look. the slim stick is surprisingly moisturizing and really brings a lot of hydration game to the table, without sacrificing a bit of color impact. the combination is light and results in a nice sheen that enhances your natural lip. if coral’s not your thing, you can scoop these up in three other colors. (fun fact: jouer’s website shows swatches on models of different skin tones so you can really get a feel for what will flatter you.)

ps – happy election day! i can’t get this song out of my head…

on my lips

jouer moisturizing lip gloss in hamptons, $20
a perfect gloss for daytime, this peachy shimmer has been my daily go-to gloss either on its own or layered on top of lipstick for extra shine. the shade is a sheer tangerine, not as orange in real life as it looks!

ellis faas milky lips in l204, $35
don’t be alarmed by the slightly sci-fi look of this liquid lipstick discovered from glossybox. the super-pigmented gloss glides on incredibly smoothly and feels amazing on lips. application is with a brush, giving you tons of control over how much or how little you want on your pout. i love to add a swipe of it over a moisturizing balm or aquaphor ointment as a finishing touch to wake up my look a bit.

mary kay nourishine plus lip gloss in inspiring, $14
a conditioning and soothing gloss that transforms your lips with a pearlescent shimmer. perfect to layer over dark lipsticks and matte shades while ingredients help to soften and calm skin. best of all, your luxurious new lips come with a benefit to a great cause as mary kay will donate $1 from every sale to their ‘beauty that counts’ initiative which raises awareness to help end domestic violence.

smashbox reflection high shine lip gloss in firecracker, $19
high impact shine with the feel of a moisturizing balm (thanks to supercharged hyaluronic acid), this shade is a bright strawberry red with pink pearl and gold glitter for reflective shine. the thick, non-sticky formula leaves a sheer finish that’s gorgeous on its own or great over your favorite under layer for deeper color payoff.

revlon colorburst lip butter in cotton candy, $6.49
these are still a big hit with me and i’m loving this shimmery medium pink shade. recently, it’s always with me and i’m constantly putting it on. the softness in color is such a nice contrast to fall’s dark tones and i really like the way it lightens the mood.

nars velvet gloss lip pencil in new lover, $24
silky shine, universally flattering golden rose color, all in the most convenient package ever. what’s not to love, here? i have been wearing this day and night to the tune of many compliments, so don’t mind me while i stockpile this little lady.

what’s on your lips?
