the last time i was in nyc i got to chatting with stephanie johnson when i realized that i hadn’t heard a word she said because i couldn’t take my eyes off of her eyelashes. a makeup minimalist, stephanie always looks great, but she was batting some major lash and i had to know her secret. when she was deep in the middle of telling me about sourcing fabrics for the fall 2013 line in hong kong, i blurted out “i’m sorry what’s happening with your eyelashes, i have to know!” she laughed and revealed to me that she had been at a magazine event and received a tube of l’oreal mascara in her gift bag. she said it was life-changing and that she would text me a picture of the tube when she got home (is she a good friend or what?). her text message that evening revealed an unfamiliar black and white tube – i immediately set out for the closest duane reade on a mission to find one.

i’m now a couple of weeks into my love affair with said black and white tube and i could not be more hooked. my lashes are sporting some serious volume thanks to the jumbo-sized brush and they are never clumped thanks to a crazy bristle arrangement that you’ve got to experience for yourself. my lashes have always been so, so – not super dark, not super long, not super thick but one coat of l’oreal’s collagen-laced formula and they are dark and defined. it holds curl without making lashes feel heavy and it stays all day without flakes or smudges. this has quickly become my favorite mascara and at under $8, i can imagine that it’s here to stay.

l’oreal voluminous power volume 24 hour mascara is available in drugstores and online for $7.99.

july bag + balm

july bag + balm

bag: j.crew printed makeup pouch, $16.99 (on sale!)

balm: l’oreal colour riche caresse stick, $7.99

i’ve had my eye on the chunky makeup pouch from j.crew since it popped up in stores earlier this spring. it’s been on my list to share with you and since it’s on sale i just had to include it in this month’s bag + balm duo. it’s made of waxed canvas and it’s the perfect size at almost 4 x 6. you can really stuff it with all of your beauty booty and it will serve you well to tote your daily essentials if you’re a big bag carrier or it’s great for overnights.

one thing you’ll want to be sure to keep inside is l’oreal’s new colour riche caresse sticks. i’m kind of cheating this month since these are not really a balm (at all) but i’m pretty in love with them. the sticks are sheer and deeply tinted with a consistency falling between a lipstick and a gloss. they are moisturizing and give a glossy finish with amazing color payoff that lasts a really long time. i’m liking these even better than revlon’s lip butters (especially for summer) because they’re a bit lighter in texture but more pigmented. win, win.

true match l’oreal super blendable blush

newsflash: it’s winter.

urgent breaking news: my skin is sallow!

i am nonstop daydreaming of an upcoming getaway to the mediterranean in may 2011 but until i can sail away to the greek isles, i must get through these next few chilly months. i’m a big believer in bronzer but find that i really only use it when the sun and i operate gravely opposite schedules, like from november – march. in my recent plight to find the best bronzer to weather winter 2010/11 on a drugstore budget, i came upon l’oreal’s true match blendable blush in soft sun. it’s so budget friendly at $9 and is the exact right shade (bronzer should be no more than two shades darker than your natural tone).  best of all it’s not shimmery. i’ve been applying it on the fullest part of my cheeks with my favorite angled brush and ta-da!  a simple way to beat the january blahs.

never met a clinique mascara i didn’t like

but i might like this one the best!

mascara wands come in every shape and size these days. there’s the s-shape, the medieval torture-ball, the elongated medieval torture ball, the brush-comb hybrid, but the latest innovation is called the willow wand and it’s your new best friend.

willow is light as air and designed to follow the natural curve of your eye. couple it up with clinique’s new high lengths mascara formula and the duo stretch lashes impossibly long, even bringing the tiniest ones out of hiding. i will also say that the wand catches the perfect amount of mascara every time never clumping plus it’s super easy to flip over and do your lower set. this stuff is the best i’ve found in the lengthening department and the finished look leaves lashes conditioned and flexible so they look like they’re yours all yours.

at $14 and fool-proof, i’m gonna go ahead and call this one a makeup bag must-have.
