lip gloss lineup

lip gloss lineup

for a blog called the glossarie, lip gloss sure doesn’t get much play around here. i’ve been in a longstanding lipstick / tinted lip balm phase because i had started to feel like glosses were kind of…annoying. they stick to everything (hair, wine glasses, the like) and you can’t get through a full glossy-lipped meal without smearing it all over the place. in short, they feel fussy and i was over it.

but, i’ve slowly been getting back into the lipgloss game and there have been a bunch of key players impressing me as of late. seems like with these bang-up formulas, i can have the shiny lips i like without the hassle!

physician’s formula pH matchmaker pH powered lip gloss, $9.95there’s very little this gloss can’t do. it has a mirror along the side of the tube and a lighted top for application in the dark.** the paintbrush applicator is perfect for getting the right amount of gloss on your lips and the formula reacts to your pH to create a “custom shade.” once it fades, you’re left with a light stain that i kind of like.

mark. glimmer shine lip gloss, $12these are gorgeous, and all about the shine. i love the light, hydrating formula and the sheer colors tint lips in just the right way, leaving them smooth and full with a glossy finish. the oversized tube looks ultra expensive with its shiny gold top and the flat applicator makes putting it on a piece of cake. they are easy to wear – a makeup bag must have.

miracle skin lip rewind, $24 - sometimes your lips just need a little something extra. with this click pen from miracle skin you get a beautiful jewel-tone finish and ingredients that work behind the scenes to hydrate, restore, enhance and protect. lips feel comfortable while you wear and the hydration effects really last once it fades. a definite must for those seeking a little color and a lot of nourishment!

aerin beauty limited edition lip gloss, $30 – for the girls out there who just want to feel pretty, from the time you pull the product out of your purse until you tuck it away, this gloss is for you. off the bat, it’s nothing  fancy – a medium weight, near full-coverage pink that goes on extra smooth and doesn’t settle into lines – but something about this gloss just brightens up my whole face and makes me smile. i can’t get enough! a clutch must.

nyx butter gloss, $5 – these were such a pleasant surprise! the formula is creamy and opaque with beautiful color payoff and bonne bell-like deliciousness. each shade is named after a sweet treat and the insanely moisturizing gloss is, well, just like butter. i cannot stop swiping these on my lips and i think the four shades currently knocking around in my purse says something very important about my feelings on the matter.

**it works! i tested it…but who are you people applying your lip gloss in the dark? am i too old to understand the need for this? please advise.

i haven’t seen the likes of the easter bunny in well over a decade, but if his hippity hop highness were to pay me a visit i would love to see these treats hidden inside my basket – or, better yet, tucked into this holographic bag from sephora.

dr. hauschka eye shadow trio, $40
deborah lippmann rockin’ robin, $19
bobbi brown lilac rose shimmer brick, $42
mark. stack and style rings, $18
smith’s minted rose lip balm tube, $6
sephora the perfectionist makeup sponge, $12

happy easter sunday to you!

my interview with mark. brand ambassador ashley greene

ashley greene

last wednesday, i had the pleasure of attending a congressional briefing to announce data from the “no more” study. mark. brand ambassador ashley greene joined advocates on the hill to share sobering statistics related to attitudes toward, and experience with dating abuse, partner violence, and sexual assault among teens and young adults. the results clearly underscore the need to educate young people so that they recognize the signs of abuse and how to safely intervene to help end it. ashley also announced that m.powerment by mark. will award 25 new grants totaling $125,000 to expand its healthy relationship college program which helps students recognize the warning signs and encourages them to actively step-in as bystanders to prevent and stop violence before it starts.

after the briefing, ashley and i sat down to chat about m.powerment by mark. and a few burning beauty topics. we covered everything from self confidence to our shared befuddlement over why guys always tend to get the longest lashes. i walked away completely inspired by ashley’s dedication to the m.powerment cause and with a true envy of her poise and strong sense of self.

why is it so important to spread the m.powerment message and raise awareness about dating abuse and partner violence?

for me, it was sobering to hear the statistics that 1 in 4 women between the ages of 15 and 22 have experienced dating abuse or violence or they know someone who has. it’s something that needs to be addressed and hopefully it impacts other people as much as it has me. a really big part of stopping this dating abuse and violence is allowing these young girls to understand that it is ok to speak out. there are places that they can go and people they can talk to; if you’re somebody’s friend that it’s ok for you to speak to them and be there for them. we also want it to be preventative. i think a lot of people just don’t know the warning signs that could essentially stop this in its tracks before it even happens.

you talk a lot about using your celebrity power for the greater good, which i love. can you touch on what supporting this cause means to you and how it plays into your greater role?

my job is great and it does have its ups and its downs, but one of the really big ups is that i am able to help other people. it’s important to me especially because when i was younger, i didn’t have that self-confidence and luckily i had a mother who really instilled that in me. she has always said to me that she thinks i have the power to change the world and i should use it. that was very empowering and it’s important that i pass that on. i’ve been given this wonderful gift of being able to help people. so, i’m going to – as best i can.

one of the themes running through the m.powerment campaign is the importance of self-confidence. besides your mom, is there anywhere else that you draw confidence from or people who you turn to when you need a boost?

i have worked really hard to surround myself with people who love me through my ups and my downs – because everyone has them. you need people that are going to support you when you are down. i also recently started telling myself things that i love about myself everyday along with the things that i love about the people that i’ve surrounded myself with. it’s easy to put yourself down; it’s harder to bring yourself back up.

you have had the opportunity to work with some of the best hair and makeup talent in the business. have you picked up any tips and tricks that you work into your own stuff?

i have learned a lot from sitting in the mirror and watching these people perform their magic. for me less is more. in my teenage years, i was trying to look older, and now that i’m starting to get a little older i have realized that it’s just better to play up what you’ve been given rather than try and cover it up. that’s another part of being confident – loving yourself and what you’ve been given.

what’s your favorite facial feature to play up?

i love lashes. there is something so glamorous about having really thick, full lashes! and it always seems like it’s the men who are born with them. i probably wouldn’t wear makeup if I had those natural lashes that went on for days.

if we were to peek inside your clutch, what would i find in your #lipbomb?

mark. gloss gorgeous lip click is one of my favorites. i like it because it stains a little bit and it’s not tacky. the new lip crayons are also great. they don’t dry your lips out. the color payoff is true to what you see in the stick and they’re very rich. honestly, if i’m not wearing one of those, then it’s petroleum jelly – just to keep my lips hydrated, especially with all of my travel.

what are some of your other mark. favorites?

the make it go away makeup removing wipes. when i fly, i don’t like wearing a face full of makeup so they are one of the staples in my bag. i like got the goods foundation a lot, too. i’m really picky about what i put on my face because i try and keep it pretty clear.

endless thanks to the mark. team for including me in such an important and memorable day! you can click here to learn more about m.powerment by mark. and shop products that support the cause.

i cannot even begin to tell you how much i love working with mark. the line has exceeded every single one of my expectations – and we’re only two full months into this adventure! i had plans to review a bunch of products for you last month, but i kept finding so many great ones that i finally had to lump them all together into one fabulous group of favorites.

serious rock ring, $18
vintage glam in the color of the year – costume jewelry never looked so good!

just pinched instant blush tint in cheeky, $8
glides on sheer + stays all day, can’t get enough of this little guy.

on the dot pastel eye color compact, $16
nine shades of sorbet give me endless options and
each one goes on super smooth to make playing with color a little less scary.

celebrate fragrance mini, $7
a flirty blend of citrus and plum – perfectly sized for beauty on the go.

keep it going longwear eyeliner + shadow in entourage, $4.99
the best black eyeliner according to the mark girls (they were not wrong!) -

glimmer shine lip gloss in berry glimmer, $12
gorgeous color and shine with a stick-free feel that is so rare in lipgloss land.

ps – you can see one more of monthly faves (this one may surprise you!) right this way

these or those: vintage earrings

these or those: vintage earrings

i have a soft spot for vintage-inspired sparkle and i’ve had my eye on these lulu frost stunners for the longest. my husband might have a heart attack if i spent $180 on a pair of earrings (that in all likelihood, i will be over by next season…i’m the most fickle of fashion lovers), so i could not be more thrilled by these gorgeous alternatives from mark. both styles offer a unique feathered shape with an art deco feel. they’re ornate and at the same time, timelessly elegant. one of each, please?

these: mark. good vintage earrings, $18

those: lulu frost demeter earrings, $180

ps – did you hear lisa salzer was at the ifb conference in nyc yesterday? she doled out a wealth of warm-hearted business advice, i think i developed the most serious of girl crushes. still not sure i can pull the trigger on those earrings, though :)

something scented

something scented

1. gimmicky or not, i have to say that i’m kind of entranced with this fragrance jewelry by lisa hoffman. you can fill pendants, bracelets, cuffs and earrings with scented beads for a fragrance experience that takes you beyond the bottle. (tom binns for lisa hoffman studs, $200)

2. my new favorite something scented! mark’s jewel shine perfume is a fruity floral (think guava and peach paired with sophisticated gardenia, a hint of amber and – get this – cocoa marshmallow). the scent really surprised me because it’s equally fresh, blossom-y and almost woodsy all at the same time. the notes are beautifully blended, culminating in a combination that’s perfect for everyday and a formula that lingers without feeling overpowering. yum! (mark. jewel shine, $28)

3. this tiny travel atomizer is a big game changer. the reason being that you can fill it directly from any perfume or cologne bottle with a removable spray head (read: pretty much all of them). there is no funnel necessary and it holds fifty sprays of your favorite scent. (perfume travel atomizer, $7.99)

4. i can’t get enough of these fragrance wipes by nomaterra. single-use and begging to go abroad, these babies are available in packs of twelve. dc beauties can join me tonight to celebrate the new fragrance launch and take these for a test drive! (nomaterra fragrance wipes, $36)

5. if you’re looking for a great way to keep it pretty, anthropologie’s provence society perfume bottle is the perfect addition to your vanity. just fill it with your favorite fragrance, dab on wrists, and watch them swoon. (small perfume bottle, $18)

pink eye

one of the boldest trends coming out in beauty for spring 2013 is pink eyeshadow. we’re seeing shades from baby pink to fuchsia in shimmer and matte, appearing in both cream and powder formulas. i’m not going to lie to you – it’s a lot of look!

but, the more that i’ve played around with pink, i’ve found that it’s equally youthful and glamorous – and when you wear it on your eyes, it’s a great way to stand out. maybe it’s not for everyone and it can be a bit tricky to pull off, but i’ve rounded up nine options, so whether you’re up for a pastel dusting or a wash of hot pink, you’ve got plenty of ways to wear it now.

top row:
lancome color design infinite in everlasting rose, $24.50
givenchy ombre a fleur de peau eyeshadow in pearly rose, $34
make up for ever powder blush in candy pink, $20

middle row:
ysl ombre solo in parisienne pink, $30
urban decay eyeshadow in woodstock, $18
laura mercier second skin cheek color in rose petal, $24

bottom row:
sephora collection colorful mono eyeshadow in sweet candy pink, $13
cargo eyeshadow dup in sarasota, $20
i-mark wet/dry eye shadow in luvstruck, $7

tip: if you want to try the trend, but you’re not game to invest in a whole pot of pink shadow, try dusting some blush on your eyes to get the look. chances are, you’ve got more than one shade of pink already in your makeup wardrobe so you can go pink without spending a cent.

think you’ll do the pink thing this spring?

golden globes beauties

golden globes beauties

i love to go beauty gazing on the red carpet from my couch. while the awards for best of the year in tv and film were being doled out, i was hard at work whittling down my choices for best nails, hair, lip, lashes, brow, and best everything.

  • hands down: best nails went to zooey deschanel. the nail art queen did not disappoint with her tiny tv cameras and vintage film strips. (details here!)
  • tangerine tango: the lip on jessica alba created quite a stir! the color is hourglass cosmetics’ opaque rouge liquid lipstick in riviera.
  • shocking choice: i thought the best hair was jessica chastain’s. everyone hated it, but i thought the pulled back look set in waves really accentuated the actress’ gorgeous fiery red shade and her pretty facial features.
  • arch enemy: isla fisher gave me major brow envy, but i really was pretty in love with her entire beauty look. the side part, the berry lip, well done.
  • lush lashes: oh! the flutter fringe on rosie huntington whitely – so gorgeous. celeb makeup artist fiona stiles achieved the look using mark lash all you want high volume mascara.
  • best everything: anne hathaway’s beauty look was a vision. i’m still obsessed with her pixie and her whole face was completely flawless.

who were your favorite beauty looks last night?
