christmas wishes

christmas wishes

*
confession: the stocking is always my favorite part of christmas because that’s where all of the beauty goodies are usually hiding. i have a swarm of cosmetic wishes this year and i can’t wait to see which ones come true.

1 – every celebrity and makeup artist under the sun claims cle de peau concealer ($70) to be life changing. it wins at everything from blending to coverage, texture and flawless concealing. it’s about time i bit the bullet. i need it.

2 – i need another neutral shadow like i need a hole in the head, but something about nars mississippi mermaid ($24) is calling to me. it’s the perfect champagne for an overall lid color, inner corner highlight and for brow bone brightening.

3 – these new blush cremes from clarins ($30) are gorgeous. if i could, i would hoard all four shades and cocktail them together for the prettiest in natural and smooth cheek color. bonus: natural oils and vitamin e give them a hydrating leg up over other options.

4 – this bottle promises volume, smoothness, conditioning, strength, and polish, all in one oil-free formula. with weightless shine, manageable body, heat protection, and even static control, living proof perfect hair day ($26) is everything i could ever want and more.

5 – i have learned to love applying my foundation with a dense rounded brush. make up for ever medium highlighter brush ($37) was recently recommended to me for the ultimate in flawless coverage and i can’t get my hands on it fast enough.

6 – overnight hydration masks are my sole winter skin salvation. dr. jart water fuse water-max sleeping mask ($48) locks in moisture bringing new meaning to “beauty sleep.” i love that it does not need to be washed off and works its magic all night long.

7 – and also, world peace.

happy christmas beauties! what’s on your wishlist this year?

holiday survival beauty

nars concealer, laura mercier orchid plum

i’m not saying that the holidays need surviving per se, (i absolutely adore this time of year!) but there is a certain element of stress that comes along with all of the hustle and bustle, happy though it may be. along with cocktail party fatigue and copious cups of cheer come some skin problems that are none too delightful. from dark circles, to heinous breakouts, and even those well-deserved raging hangovers, i’ve got the combination of products that will solve all of your dilemmas.

because, the way i see it, you can survive anything with the right concealer and a bold lip.

it’s a one-two punch that no one sees coming, the perfect pairing of light-refracting coverup to hide spots and a gorgeous look-at-me lip that exudes confidence and takes the attention off of any imperfections elsewhere on your face.

i am deeply in love with nars radiant creamy concealer. it’s the first thing that i’ve found that can actually be used to disguise spots and brighten up my under eyes. it’s nondrying (in fact it actually hydrates) which is key because my under eyes tend to be dry and my breakouts get very dry from the arsenal of prescription medicine that i attack them with on the regular. i use it over my foundation each morning to make problem areas virtually disappear and then i keep it in my bag for late-in-the-day touchups.

in the bold lip department, i’m a bit of a wild card. i have always been drawn to purple lips  and laura mercer’s creme smooth lip color in plum orchid is an electric violet that borders on neon fuchsia. i am obsessed with the way this shade is a touch shocking, but still deep enough to be fall/winter appropriate. it’s equal parts girly and edgy – and with all eyes on my lips, i love knowing that no one is even glancing at my tired eyes or winter weary skin.

what are your beauty survival tactics?

winter beauty

winter beauty

baby, it’s real real cold outside and i’ll be the first to admit that it’s tough to find makeup that flatters a face that’s well…flaking off. ’tis the season for me to be exfoliating all the time, along with stockpiling the best and brightest beauty products that will detract from my angry dry skin. here are a few of the things working to keep things calm and bright:

1 – exfoliation is crucial to my winter skincare routine. simple smoothing facial scrub has enough abrasion for me to know that it’s working but not so much that i can overdo the scrubbing. it cleanses as it scrubs so there is no need to double wash – my skin is left feeling soft and smooth!

2 – while i fight shine all summer long, there is nothing that brings me more happiness in winter than glowy skin. marc jacobs lightshow luminizing powder enhances all of my good features and, at the same time, allows me to hide my flaws behind a subtle veil of shimmer.  it also brings out the absolute best in my cheekbones.

3 – hand cream most certainly has a season and when it rolls around, i am never caught without a little blue tin of nivea creme. it’s luxurious, non greasy, and it soothes even the driest hands. the reasonable price tag means that i can keep one in my purse, at my desk, and in my car – meaning that hydrated hands are always at the ready.

4 – while peach-apricot blushes are normally reserved for spring, i find that a flattering pop of color can be the ultimate weapon against chilly weather, paler than average skin, and an overall lack of glow. nars guy bourdin blush in day dream is just the ticket to brighten up gray days and to bring a little vibrance to the situation.

5 – red lips are a festive solution to dress up an otherwise dreary complexion. i am yet to find someone that lipstick queen medieval does not flatter. the deep glossy tone delivers a healthy stain, infused with vitamin e to combat chapped lips. it’s sheer so you can layer it to get a bold look, or go easy for a more subtle tint.

6 – for a playful finishing touch, try demeter pixie dust. you’ll be left smelling of pixie sticks, with a citrusy sugar fragrance that’s equal parts youthful and addictive. one spritz lifts my spirits and instantly brightens my mood – and just like the dust that makes peter pan fly, the sweet stuff always leaves me thinking happy thoughts.

lip crayon love

lip crayon love

i love a good lip crayon. super easy to carry, a cinch to apply without a mirror and thanks to the narrower point, you get beautifully defined lips along with gorgeous color. pigment is often richer and more true to the product than with traditional lipstick, too. basically, it’s the ultimate in fuss-free beauty so it’s no wonder that i’ve got them coming out of my ears in all shades and brand names. but, something wonderful has happened to the lip crayon lately: it’s gone glossy! now my favorite way to apply lip color comes in a slicker, shiny finish that adds an element of sophistication to the plain old lip crayon. i’ve been stocking up on them and i’ve currently got five on constant rotation:

mark. color me in lip crayon in punchline, $12
a gorgeous fruit punch shade that lasts all day and leaves a soft stain behind

ilia lipstick crayon in karma chameleon, $24
a fiery coral packed with healing oils

topshop lip crayon in secret party, $14
a vivid raspberry with a touch of shimmer – such a unique color

nars satin lip in rikugien, $25
a super moisturizing rose pink, love the way this one feels

trish mcevoy essential balm in gorgeous pink, $38
an ultra light formula in girlie pink that brightens up my whole complexion

best in beauty: spring 2013

spring beauty favorites

the beauty brands are coming out big for their spring 2013 launches and i am loving everything that I see. here are my picks for the best products from the spring 2013 collections:

paul & joe limited edition eye color in la belle epoque is perfectly pretty. shades of powdery pink and smoky gray mean that you’ll easily stay on trend this season. ($28, beautyhabit)

lancome nailed the blush trend this season. their “in love” blush for spring 2013 is a mix of pinks that presents the most gorgeous feminine flush. the brand also wins prettiest package with the added bonus of a slide out mirror. ($49, lancome)

deborah lippmann’s moon rendezvous nail lacquer gives a flash of metallic that’s perfect for day or night. since the color is on the pale side, you’ll be sweetly in line with spring’s pastel palette. ($17, nordstrom)

simple protecting light moisturizer isn’t heavy and it offers just the right amount of hydration as we head into the warmer months. i love the addition of spf15. ($10.99, amazon)

i’m getting my punk rock princess on with juicy couture’s new couture la la. talk about unexpected! this scent is all things girly, light, and sweet. ($70, nordstrom)

nars’ dressed to kill satin lipstick will go with many skin tones, and the gold-flecked fuchsia is just right for valentine’s day. get a bold rosebud lip from this tried and true formula – it’s definitely a shade you’ll wear for seasons to come. ($24, nars)

simple’s eye make up remover pads are a welcome addition to my beauty routine. i really feel like the market has been missing a disposable eye makeup remover wipe that’s easy on sensitive skin. these are sized right and impressively effective for removing all of spring’s eye makeup (including waterproof mascara) in one swipe. ($5.00, amazon)

now, i have never met olivia but i know that we would be fast friends. i have loved and adored this girl since discovering her impeccably designed and incredibly well edited line of bracelet hair ties two years ago. she started her successful e-commerce and wholesale brand in her college dorm room and it has developed into something that’s been recognized by some of the industry greats. it has been amazing to watch her grow!

a true beauty addict, her #lipbomb is impressive for two reasons: 1) olivia obviously plays favorites – nars, buxom, and revlon are each represented multiple times (meaning she clearly believes in those brands, i love the loyalty) and 2) she’s got some limited edition shades in the mix that are no longer available (a girl after my own heart).

this is definitely not the last that we will be seeing of olivia or mane message on this here blog – i’m so thrilled to feature her #lipbomb today!
