beautiful blushes

beautiful blushes
*

i was stuck in a blush rut for a long time, but lately the brands have been releasing a whole lot of pretty in the cheek department and i’m having a ball playing with all of it. i’m almost ashamed to tell you that i’ve narrowed it down to a select five (!) that are in constant rotation as of late. they’re each beautiful on their own and i’ve even discovered a few combinations that looks stunning when layered together. in short, these pops of color are helping me to survive the horrendous weather and to bring some much-needed brightness to my complexion.

bobbi brown uber pinks illuminating bronzer powder in pink peony, $38
bobbi’s illuminating bronzer powders have always been gorgeous. they are soft, sheer, and smooth and they add a touch of shimmer (but not too much) for a flattering glow. pink peony gives a natural pink flush and i love the “be bold” mantra tucked inside.

jane multi colored cheek powder in pink bouquet, $12
a silky blend of baby pinks, this powder has nourishing vitamin e in its formula. 90′s gals will surely remember this girl next door brand – and it’s back in a big way. this high-performing (petal-soft pinched cheeks!) affordably priced blush is just the beginning.

clinique cheek pop in plum pop, $21
be still my beauty-addicted beating heart! these sweet and petite gerber daisy-shaped blushes from clinique are seriously too cute. the formula here is creamy and bright – and i promise you won’t be able to help but smile every time you reach for it.

revlon highlighting palette in rose glow, $9.59
fans of bobbi brown’s shimmer bricks will delight in this drugstore version from revlon. beautiful neutral tones highlight and brighten in all the right places, while more precise application will help to define and contour. this formula is lightweight and extra lovely.

physicians formula bombshell powder palette in brunette, $12.99
physicians formula is my favorite go-to brand for fun, multi-colored blushes and they have not disappointed with their most recent release. the combo of peach, coral, and pink is easy to blend with a pretty finish that is pigmented and glowy.

a surprising winter lip

revlon blase apricot

i love when maggie and i are in each other’s heads.

as proof of our beauty blogger esp, i had just drafted a little something for you on my favorite new lip color when i was trolling through her pending posts and BOOM! i find that she has fallen for the exact same shade.

the lipstick of the hour is revlon’s classic moon drops in blasé apricot. maggie was taken with its lovely, light coral shade that is very easy to layer. you can go easy on the application or really pile it on, depending on how bright you want to be. she especially loves it under a sheer gloss for a fresh color pop to brighten these gloomy winter days.

i couldn’t agree more! for me, it provides that burst of color without being unseasonably bright. the formula is super hydrating and the color goes on completely opaque so coverage is beautiful and true to what you see in the bullet. wear time could be longer, but the fact that it doesn’t dry lips out at all or leave a clown mouth as it goes outweighs the need to reapply.

on my fair skin, blasé apricot translates to a melon and it’s especially complimentary to all of the grays and cobalts that i brought into my closet this season. it’s perfect to wear from day to evening, going with everything from t-shirts to cocktail dresses and … well, we’re obsessed.

polish favorites for fall

my nails have easily become my favorite accessory and it’s definitely the place where i love to play with color the most. i find that a fresh manicure (even if i diy) can change my whole mood and since i tend to talk with my hands a lot my paint jobs are always one of the first things people notice and comment on. i’m loving many a gorgeous polish tone for fall, here are just a handful of my current go-to’s:

mischo beauty empire state of mind, $18
this stunning line was started by a sweet dc local. her formulas are
gorgeous and the shades are selling out fast, so don’t delay!

essie parka perfect, $8.50
i’m drawn to pale blue grays and i love the slight shimmer in essie’s version,
which goes on like silk and wears like iron (as essie herself once told me).

marc jacobs petra, $18
a multi-toned metallic bronze is festive enough for a holiday party but neutral
enough for daytime. marc’s formula brings high pigment with lots of shine.

tom ford african violet, $32
i know, this one is a splurge, but can you really put a price on gorgeous
plum perfection that will keep your nails chic for seasons to come?

zoya dahlia, $9
if you haven’t tried zoya’s pixiedust you are missing out. the formula is virtually
chip-free and easily removes without the usual struggle. loving this black beauty!

butter london leccy
what’s prettier than an opal flecked overcoat? possibly nothing. if you buy
one polish for the season, make it this one because it transforms all others.

on my lips

on my lips for pre-fall

it’s been awhile since we talked about this, but every once in awhile (ok, all of the damn time) i take a look at the lip products that i’m currently rotating and i really like what i see. sometimes i like it so much that i just have to share them with you in hopes that one, you’ll discover something new, and two, maybe just maybe you’ll tell me what’s on your lips.

here’s what i’ve got goin’ on:

stila color balm lipstick in amelia, $22
if you’ve never tried these, they are are kind of incred. you get the full pigment of a lipstick with the comfort of a lip balm and a sweet minty taste. i wear it in amelia, a bright pink’y taupe, and i love the pop of color. i would buy these in a dozen shades and i adore that each tube has a mirror tucked in the cap for taxi-friendly application.

jane iredale ‘just kissed’ lip + cheek stain, $25
i know it seems like these self-adjusting lip shades are a dime a dozen, but this one really is something special. it’s a completely non-drying stain (feels like buttah) that delivers moisturizing comfort and serious shine in the perfect pink hue. it’s got all kinds of ingredients to soothe and nourish and in a pinch, you can even  put some on your cheeks.

it cosmetics vitality lip blush hydrating gloss stain in je ne sais quoi, $24
i know what you’re thinking, a second self-adjusting lip color?! but hear me out. this one is a gloss and it’s an opaque pink and it’s gorgeous. i can swipe it on, it feels amazing and it looks like a custom-made pink glossy shade that was created just for me. it’s non-sticky and it wears down to a nice stain. love this brand, lovin’ this stuff.

revlon just bitten kissable balm stain in lovesick, $7
i don’t know what provoked me to pick these up since they aren’t exactly breaking news, but this color has completely breathed new life into this product for me. lovesick is kind of a creamy fuchsia and i’ve already adopted it as my go-to pre-fall lip. the shape of these pencils makes it easy to line and fill things in delivering shape and shine, oh and color.

giorgio armani rouge ecstasy lipstick in 400, $34
these babies could anchor their own post. (and i never get excited about lipstick!) the formula is a moisturizing velvet, bringing a touch of care and a whole lot of satin color to your lip game. these are lightweight and really long lasting. they’re hydrating, yet yield a matte finish for a lipstick that’s unlike anything that i’ve ever tried.

white hot nails

i cannot get enough of the simple chicness of the white nail trend. yes, at first it reminded me of the days when i used to paint my nails in white out (yes, i was the girl painting her nails with white out during study hall…then drawing flowers on them with a sharpie. what can i say? it was the pre-teen nail art of the 90′s.), but i have overcome my own white nail prejudices and i’m totally loving the trend. there is something so impossibly elegant about the finished look and i’m extra excited to wear it when i’ve got a bit more a sunkissed glow going. thankfully the brands are on board, and you can score white nail polish at both the department store and the drugstore:

essie marshmallow, $8
revlon spirit (on my nails, above), $4.79
deborah lippmann, $17

will you try it?

i met marissa a couple of weeks ago when she and her team were sweet enough to treat me and several other bloggers to an insanely delicious tasting menu at brasserie beck before the gilt warehouse sale. marissa is a doll and she is flawlessly stunning. we instantly got to chatting about beauty, so when she expressed interest in sharing her #lipbomb, i jumped at the chance to feature her. marissa’s lip bomb is im-pressive! this lady totes a lot of lip product in her bag on the daily and she clearly plays favorites, carrying multiple products from nars and bobbi brown. i’ve got my eye on the baby benetint and the mentha lip shine – looks i’ll be making a couple of additions to my #lipbomb thanks to marissa!

yesterday was a doozy. why the whole week can go swimmingly just for friday to come along and knock you on the head never fails to baffle me! i’m taking it easy today and soaking in the joy from these five sweetly simple things:
*
1 – the anthropologie sale (especially this top)
2 – a new lip conditioner, apricot lipstick, and white nails – all from revlon
3 – a little gold kitten for my first knucle from catbird
4 – this bamboo beauty organizer keeping my dailies perfectly pretty
5 – a hilarious audio book – seriously a must read, i don’t think i’ve ever laughed so hard!

what’s making your saturday bright and cheery? happy weekend to you!

nicole and i met at the ifb conference in 2012 and it was beauty love at first sight. she is a super talented make up artist (she did my face for my head shots that you see around the blog) and an all around sweet-as-sugar girl. nicole’s beauty expertise comes through clearly through her #lipbomb! like most of you, we definitely share an affinity for the three b’s: bobbi brown, bite, and burt’s bees. i miss her terribly since she and her hubby made the move back to nyc, but i’m happy to say that we keep in touch through the ‘net and have even managed to connect in the big city on one of my many business trips. i highly recommend that you take a journey over to nicole’s blog for a full dose of beauty and fashion goodness!
