sally hansen triple shine

sally hansen reef raf

i’ve spent the last four days in the outer banks of north carolina attending the wedding of a college friend. sadly the weather was pretty miserable, but that didn’t stop our friends from celebrating to the fullest extent. and while my toes may not have seen much sun or sand, my penchant for gold gladiators meant that they were more than on display all weekend.

before leaving town, i booked myself a pedicure (my first of the season! does anyone else let their toes “breathe” in the winter months?) and i brought sally hansen triple shine in reef-raf with me. something about the watermelon pink felt so perfect for a spring wedding and based on my experience with sally hansen, i knew the formula would not disappoint.

after the first bright and shiny stripe, the nail tech looked up at me and said “wow, nice polish!” which i took as the highest possible endorsement. when she was done, i took in my beautiful pink toes, which were practically glowing. the glossy color wore amazingly well throughout four days of activities (which included much ducking between the raindrops in flip flops – i did not pack well for the weather).

now that i’m home, my pedi is still going strong, even after taking a pretty hard beating on a joyously crowded reception dance floor. i took triple shine for a test run myself, dousing my fingers in red snapper and hello! check out that shine:

sally has once again delivered salon quality at the drugstore price and i’m in love with the way that these polishes paint and perform.

this post was sponsored by refinery 29 and sally hansen, a brand that i love and have used for years.

maggie’s top 10 of 2013

maggie's top 10 of 2013

1 – i remembered that i had eyebrows this year, and that it might be nice to take care of them and even highlight them every once in awhile. it cosmetics brow power perfector is the 5-in-1 powder gel pencil that came to my brow rescue, serving as a fill-in powder, pencil, taming gel, conditioning treatment, and brow brush all in one (i’ve been using the the ‘universal taupe’ shade to define and fill in my arches).

2 – i briefly noted my love for the stella by stella mccartney rollerball perfume here, but the quick mention does not do nearly enough justice to how much i use this bad boy. the sweet and subtle combo of rose, amber and mandarin is my daily perfume and in my purse at all times.

3 – who knew that a free birthday gift from sephora would become one of my top ten beauty staples this year? i swipe benefit’s watt’s up! highlighter under my brows and on my cheekbones every day to wake my face up.

4 – sally hansen’s super shine has become a favorite for DIY manicures. i know matte nails were trendy this past year, but i still love a shiny fnish, and this top coat does the trick (while really making color last – we’re talking a solid five days).

5 - maybelline’s color elixir in signature scarlet has become my new go-to red lip, adding a glossy, youthful twist to an always classic look.

6 – the super dark, completely clump-free and layer-able smashbox photo op eye brightening mascara is now my daily mascara – i love how it separates and defines each lash. a blend of blue pigments in the formula make lashes seems so defined in contrast to the whites of your eyes. i haven’t found a mascara this good since dior’s diorshow.

7 – i’m a sucker for celebrity endorsements, so when i heard about lauren conrad’s hair stylist’s can’t-live-without product, i had to get my hands on it. i’ve been spritzing healthy sexy hair soy tri-wheat leave-in conditioner on after every shower and i am loving the results: soft, noticeably shinier locks (but never greasy). by restoring hair’s ph balance, it essentially presses the “restart” button for your hair. since i’ve started using it i’ve had multiple friends ask me if i’ve gotten my hair cut – that’s how healthy and fresh it’s made my hair look.

8 – like lara, i’ve become addicted to simple’s revitalizing eye roll-on. it’s become my little morning wake-up ritual, after i’ve washed my face and moisturized, to sweep this cooling rollerball underneath my eyes. it de-puffs, wakes me up immediately and is the perfect primer for my undereye concealer.

9 – speaking of undereye concealer, benefit’s fake up was my new best friend in 2013. this super moisturizing concealer hides even the darkest of my circles, and, as it promises, never creases. what a welcome addition to my makeup bag!

10 – i’d heard so much about the magical josie maran pure argan oil, and i have to say it lives up to its reputation. a single drop of it on damp hair makes me feel like my split ends have disappeared, and no other product has made my hair feel quite this silky. the double-whammy oil can also be used to moisturize your skin and has been a lifesaver for my dry winter cuticles.

the shopping ban is still going strong here in glossarie’land so as you can imagine, my wish list is growing at an impossible rate. with the holidays right around the corner, i am finding that my lemmings have a festive feel – from glittery nails to a shimmery faux fur cosmetic bag, it truly tis the season.

vaseline lip therapy rosy lips, $1.99 - long lasting moisture that protects as it soothes and hydrates, now with a beautiful pink tint. this beauty has previously only been available in the uk and it has finally landed stateside. (available at food, drug, and mass retailers nationwide.)

sally hansen complete salon manicure in mermaids tale, $6.49 – i normally stay away from super glitters, but the teal tones in this one really speak to me. i’m envisioning the possibilities of an accent nail flanked by my favorite navy lacquer.

tom ford brow sculptor, $42 - brow goddess cara delevigne’s makeup artist recommends that for filling brows in it’s best to use a cream textured product for a natural look. tom ford’s option is serious and i think it’s high time i made the investment.

stephanie johnson alex sparkle cosmetic in geneva black, $48 – shimmering black sequins set against a feathery faux fur? what’s not to love! in truth, i’ve got my eye on this beauty to use as a cocktail clutch because it’s way too pretty to just keep on my vanity.

rms beauty buriti bronzer, $28 – the prettiest cream bronzer that i ever did see, i absolutely must have this iridescent brown in my collection. reviews claim that it’s light and non-greasy but it’s the COLOR that has me crazily swooning.

tata harper resurfacing mask, $55 – my skin needs treating when the weather turns cold. when my skin gets dry, my pores seal up and i’m left with a lovely crop of zits. this resurfacing mask promises to exfoliate and refresh without irritating. sign me up!

i’ve been a little testing machine lately and sometimes there is just TOO much goodness to share at once. rather than keep you waiting while i craft individual posts for each of these pretty products, i’ve mashed them into one gorgeous little group. i hope you like what you see!

beautyblender, $19.95
is anyone else a complete sucker for the beauty to go section at sephora? this not-at-all-new pink sponge totally captured me and it was way beyond time that i gave it a try. i have used it both wet and dry to apply my favorite cc cream and i have to say that it has never been faster or easier to flawlessly blend my foundation. i’ve been using the blendercleanser to keep it clean and, well, i may just toss my brushes forever.

kiehl’s multi super-corrective cream, $62
talk about a major upgrade to my fall face care, this ultra thick yet still non-greasy cream from kiehl’s is super luxe. it glides on to my skin and has a slight optical blurring effect. it soothes my tight post-shower skin and it’s thick enough that i can use it as an eye cream at night. it’s extremely hydrating but it leaves my skin matte so it feels like i’ve got nothing on. my foundation blends seamlessly over top and my face feels comfy all day long.

balm chicky sweet baby ginger balm balm, $12
you guys, this stuff is GORGEOUS! the balm chicky line of cheeky balms is too cute for words. they are chunky and oversized (reminding me of my favorite bath & body works balms of the 90′s) and the flavors are to DIE for – melon, cucumber, hot chocolate, honey. yum! best of all each tube has a “friend end” for sharing. they are hydrating and flavorful, and way too much fun. if you know what’s good for you, you will def check these out.

sally hansen fuzzy coat in tight knit, $6.99
this polish was the hero in yesterday’s textured nail art post. it was definitely way outside of my normal nail repertoire but i’m so happy that i gave it a test run because they are really great. you can layer them over your favorite solid shade, put them on bare nails, or even “sandwich” them together different jelly polishes for a fun effect. they were a surprisingly long time and they’re a cinch to remove. definitely a fun little update!

lulu organics jasmine travel hair powder, $9.50
another star from the beautyhabit collection, this hair powder is a fabulous little upgrade on my current go-to. it’s silky and talc-free and its tiny size is beyond perfect for keeping handy on the go. on day two, i often find myself with a need to powder up late in the day as opposed to first thing in the morning. this is so easy to work with in a restaurant bathroom (or wherever you find yourself) and the jasmine scent is delightful.

josie maran argan cream blush, $22
i don’t know where this pretty golden compact filled with soft pink perfection has been hiding, but i sure am thrilled to have discovered it. finally someone has created a cream blush that blends into skin without just sitting on top. the sunrise color is gorgeous, leaving me with a natural glowy flush that lasts all day long. my skin absolutely loves something about the argan oil and i love that it doesn’t “fight” my foundation. pretty, pretty, pretty.

casa ramos (aka glossarie hq) truly is a revolving door for beauty products. i am on a first name basis with my ups man, and the fed ex guy knows that i work from home so he just knocks once and leaves packages at my door. you will never hear me complain about the generosity of the brands that support the glossarie. it is because of their kindness that i’m able to test and review as many products as i do! all of that being said, i am still an avid beauty shopper. my reach goes way past the limits of things that are sent to me for consideration and this month i’m craving a handful of pretty products:

prabal garung for sally hansen in loden green: this one graced the runways in february and it will finally be available this month! army green is going to be my go-to nail shade for fall. i love that it’s unexpected, more interesting than navy, and so surprisingly chic. this particular shade is limited edition, so once you see it, do not wait!

diorshow fusion mono eyeshadow in meteore, $30: this coppery gold will be perfect for creating a sophisticated gilded eye. the metallic finish is so on-trend and the darker shade is a nice update on my usual champagne shadow. i plan to concentrate this shadow all over my lid for a glowy little halo, adding a few coats of mascara for impact.

trish mcevoy instant eye lift concealer, $38: word on the street is that this wonder product goes far beyond the triangle of light. beauty editors have touted its powers in concealing everything from blemishes to around-the-nose redness, and even the occasional scar (arms and legs not excluded). i’m thinking there’s nothing it can’t do.

oribe creme for style, $35: i have been nursing a sample of this stuff since the neiman marcus fall beauty event. i am nearing ever closer to the last drop and it has dawned on me that i will need the full size. when i use it, my hair is full, shapely, and well, perfect. style lasts easily for two days. this might be the best blow-in creme ever.

almay smart shade blush, $11: call me a sucker for cute packaging, but those polka dots are speaking to me. plus, i have never been known to resist a self-adjusting anything and i love the different shades of pink in this one. also, kate hudson (allegedly) wears it and she’s kind of a goddess.

paul & joe limited edition lipstick cases, $5 each: you can pair these with any paul & joe lipstick for the ultimate in beauty accessorizing. i especially love the tribal print, but those peach-toned roses would look so nice on a tangerine orange like once upon a time. any of the three are sure to look so good coming out of my new favorite clutch.

now, which to buy first?

cuticle care

cuticle care 101

the harsh effects of winter are so unforgiving on your skin, but perhaps no precious part is hit harder than your hands. while hand creams and balms play a big role in preventing dryness, i like to be sure to give a little extra love to my cuticles this time of year.

historically, they are probably the least cared for part of my entire body, but as i have slowly discovered the benefits of a good cuticle treatment, it has become a tiny luxury that i cannot live without. (dry cuticles can lead to snags and tears that are not only painful, but can open you up to infection – ouch!)

in the land of cuticle care, there are creams and there are oils. depending on your needs and your preferences, the options are endless. the key ingredient in all products is some sort of moisturizing oil, so you can opt for a convenient, less messy cream, or go straight to the source and choose an easily absorbed oil. some say that oils are best, especially if you’re dealing with super dry skin, but i find that a cream can definitely soften things up nicely.

now that you’re schooled in cuticle care, i’ve rounded up several of my favorite products, at all price points to help ensure that yours are not overlooked this season:

top row, left to right:
dior creme abricot fortifying cream for nails, $24
deborah lippmann cuticle oil, $20
sally hansen cuticle eraser + balm, $6
l’occitane cuticle & nail cream, $18

bottom row, left to right:
the body shop almond nail & cuticle oil, $12
butter london handbag holiday cuticle oil, $18
burt’s bees lemon butter cuticle cream, $6
lush lemony flutter cuticle butter, $16.95
