smashbox camera ready bb cream eyes

i am so sorry for the radio silence around here! it turns out that something attributed to pregnancy hormones has me experiencing some serious sleep deprivation and well, it’s just not a good time. i’ve had a dream pregnancy so far (minimal-to-zero nausea and virtually no loss of energy) so i really can’t complain – i suppose it’s mother nature’s way of getting me ready for the sleepless nights soon to arrive in august.

since i’m on night six of four hours or less, i’ve been relying on under eye concealer more than ever, and my expectations have gone through the roof as my dark circles become darker, and darker with each passing day. i picked up smashbox’s bb cream eyes a couple of weeks ago, but haven’t really needed to put it to a test until now – and either people are way too kind not to tell me how tired i look, or this stuff is really doing the trick.

in essence, smashbox has taken the best of a bb cream (benefits that moisturize, prime, perfect, control oil, and protect with spf) and combined it with the coverage of a concealer. the result is a wonder product that not only hides dark circles, but works to make them vanish (along with those pesky fine lines) with regular use. the thing that i like best about this formula is that it also illuminates the slightest bit (i hate concealers that fall flat under my eyes) and it actually hides that little bit of puff that comes with lack of sleep. it’s creamy and it doesn’t crease, plus it takes care of oil which has been helping to keep my mascara from smudging (major bonus). i love that i don’t have to use a primer and that it stays exactly where i put it, even through the longest of days.

i’m giving this one two very enthusiastic, albeit sleepy, thumbs up. mama bears and honorary aunties alike will all love the latest from smashbox.

my ten favorite product finds of 2013

it’s been a very good year for the glossarie and the growth of my beauty bag and makeup routine is further proof of all the wonderful products that i was introduced to in 2013. ten products have become everyday, you-will-have-to-pry-them-out-of-my-cold-dead-hands favorites. these are the bars against which all other products in their category are measured. so without further ado, here are the best of the best:

top 10 of 2013

*

1 – chapstick hydration lock

2 -stila countless color pigment in lyric

3 – mark. make it rich lip crayon – how these never made it into their own post,
i will never know! coverage is creamy and intense, super comfortable and long-wearing. peony is my winter shade of choice, with punch being my year-round go-to.

4 – maybelline volum’express the falsies big eyes

5 – smashbox camera ready cc cream

6 – bite lush lip tint in orchard – another product that snuck into the top 10 without a post. this glossy, moisturizing, hot pink is the one thing that wakes me up each
morning. i’m obsessed with the formula and the color is so poppy and fresh.

7 – benefit gimme brow

8 – my partnership with simple skincare in 2013 was a true blessing for my problem skin! i have fallen in love with every product in the range and i love the calm, clear effects
that each one delivers with no surprises as to how my skin will react.

9 – real techniques expert face brush

10 – jouer perfume oil

is there something that you discovered via the glossarie
that’s still holding steady in your daily beauty routine?

maggie’s top 10 of 2013

maggie's top 10 of 2013

1 – i remembered that i had eyebrows this year, and that it might be nice to take care of them and even highlight them every once in awhile. it cosmetics brow power perfector is the 5-in-1 powder gel pencil that came to my brow rescue, serving as a fill-in powder, pencil, taming gel, conditioning treatment, and brow brush all in one (i’ve been using the the ‘universal taupe’ shade to define and fill in my arches).

2 – i briefly noted my love for the stella by stella mccartney rollerball perfume here, but the quick mention does not do nearly enough justice to how much i use this bad boy. the sweet and subtle combo of rose, amber and mandarin is my daily perfume and in my purse at all times.

3 – who knew that a free birthday gift from sephora would become one of my top ten beauty staples this year? i swipe benefit’s watt’s up! highlighter under my brows and on my cheekbones every day to wake my face up.

4 – sally hansen’s super shine has become a favorite for DIY manicures. i know matte nails were trendy this past year, but i still love a shiny fnish, and this top coat does the trick (while really making color last – we’re talking a solid five days).

5 - maybelline’s color elixir in signature scarlet has become my new go-to red lip, adding a glossy, youthful twist to an always classic look.

6 – the super dark, completely clump-free and layer-able smashbox photo op eye brightening mascara is now my daily mascara – i love how it separates and defines each lash. a blend of blue pigments in the formula make lashes seems so defined in contrast to the whites of your eyes. i haven’t found a mascara this good since dior’s diorshow.

7 – i’m a sucker for celebrity endorsements, so when i heard about lauren conrad’s hair stylist’s can’t-live-without product, i had to get my hands on it. i’ve been spritzing healthy sexy hair soy tri-wheat leave-in conditioner on after every shower and i am loving the results: soft, noticeably shinier locks (but never greasy). by restoring hair’s ph balance, it essentially presses the “restart” button for your hair. since i’ve started using it i’ve had multiple friends ask me if i’ve gotten my hair cut – that’s how healthy and fresh it’s made my hair look.

8 – like lara, i’ve become addicted to simple’s revitalizing eye roll-on. it’s become my little morning wake-up ritual, after i’ve washed my face and moisturized, to sweep this cooling rollerball underneath my eyes. it de-puffs, wakes me up immediately and is the perfect primer for my undereye concealer.

9 – speaking of undereye concealer, benefit’s fake up was my new best friend in 2013. this super moisturizing concealer hides even the darkest of my circles, and, as it promises, never creases. what a welcome addition to my makeup bag!

10 – i’d heard so much about the magical josie maran pure argan oil, and i have to say it lives up to its reputation. a single drop of it on damp hair makes me feel like my split ends have disappeared, and no other product has made my hair feel quite this silky. the double-whammy oil can also be used to moisturize your skin and has been a lifesaver for my dry winter cuticles.

smashbox liquid halo hd foundation

smashbox liquid halo

it’s been awhile since something truly revolutionary has come along in a foundation, so we are definitely due for a groundbreaking new launch. i believe smashbox has done it with their liduid halo hd foundation.

as a little backstory, i used the halo powder foundation for years and it truly was best in class because, hello, a hydrating powder? so innovative. but, as i’ve crept past 30, i’ve shied away from powders because i think they tend to settle and age. (plus, glowy is in and who am i to fight that?) i’m always searching for the world’s most perfect foundation, one that magically covers all of my imperfections yet still looks like i’m not wearing a drop of makeup. it hasn’t been easy to find, until now.

new halo liquid hd foundation is everything i’ve been looking for. it’s oil free, non drying, and i can wear it all day looking and feeling like i’ve got nothing on. my pesky pimples and acne scarring are completely hidden and my skin looks like it’s lit from within, yet it’s not at all shiny. i had a quick chat with the smashbox lady at nordstrom and i learned that the highly impressive results come from color pigments that are encapsulated in gel so they actually blur your imperfections while evening out skin tone and remaining virtually undetectable. just further proof that gel technology is taking the beauty world by storm.

i think what i love best about this foundation is that i’ve found something that is perfect for everyday, but high performance enough for special events and even the occasional photo shoot. it’s no longer necessary to keep extra bottles handy for different makeup scenarios and that alone is enough to make me want to buy stock in this stuff.

new smashbox liquid halo foundation spf 15 is available at sephora for $42.

my 30 second face

smashbox cc cream halo blush

it’s always good to have a 30-second face in your back pocket. one or two go-to products that you can slap on at a second’s notice and be completely presentable to the world in under a minute. the two products that comprise my hurry-up-and-get-out-the-door routine change on a regular basis, but my summer duo is pure dynamite.

smashbox’s cc cream comes in five shades and it has a whole lot going for it. for one, it’s extremely lightweight making it perfect for the lovely 90+ and sticky weather we’ve been having this week. beyond that, it completely covers my acne scars and dark spots while controlling oil (major!) and taking care of my daily spf 30. its skin-perfecting formula has serious staying power and emits a gorgeous glow. it does so much more than your average foundation, kind of killing all of the primer/foundation/setting powder birds (in a more minimal way) with one stone.

the new(isn) smashbox halo blushes are genius. a quick swirl into the freshly ground color is all i need to bring a luminous flush to my fair cheekbones. the ‘warm glow’ shade is a rosy nude that’s way better than natural and the staying power that these blushes possess makes them near waterproof (definitely summer sweat-proof) so there’s no issue with fading. i love the shade range in this group so much – perfect for warming up any skin tone, even if you’re spending as much time inside (and out of the sun) as i am this summer.

i met marissa a couple of weeks ago when she and her team were sweet enough to treat me and several other bloggers to an insanely delicious tasting menu at brasserie beck before the gilt warehouse sale. marissa is a doll and she is flawlessly stunning. we instantly got to chatting about beauty, so when she expressed interest in sharing her #lipbomb, i jumped at the chance to feature her. marissa’s lip bomb is im-pressive! this lady totes a lot of lip product in her bag on the daily and she clearly plays favorites, carrying multiple products from nars and bobbi brown. i’ve got my eye on the baby benetint and the mentha lip shine – looks i’ll be making a couple of additions to my #lipbomb thanks to marissa!

pretty gifty: kits and sets

pretty gifty: kits and sets

my younger and wiser sister suggested a pretty gifty post centered around sephora’s amazing selection of combination sets and makeup kits that crop up by the dozen around the holidays. her exact words were “whoever said it was better to give than to receive clearly never got one of these!” she touts these selections for their wow impact and general bang-for-the-buck’ness – and who am i to argue with that kind of genius?

her picks for an extra beautiful holiday (in miniature) are as follows:

bareminerals the total package collection, $36
benefit cosmetics she’s so…jetset! $36
sephora favorites glitz and glam party sampler, $45
tarte the stand outs limited edition best sellers kit, $25
too faced beauty editor darlings set, $19 <– steal of the century!
smashbox try it kit, $19
