tarte is one of those brands that just keeps getting better and better. they consistently put out a beautiful lineup of natural products that not only perform, but they’re pretty, too. the brand’s mastery of color cosmetics should not be news to anyone reading, but their latest releases are so good that I was compelled to highlight a few of my favorites – old and new.
collector’s edition maracuja c-brighter eye treatment, $38 – i kind of can’t believe that i never posted about this eye cream before now, because i use it all of the time. it’s a do-it-all formula that hydrates, firms, and brightens. it’s thick enough to moisturize but still very easy to apply. my eyes LOVE this stuff.
lipsurgence skintuitive lip tint, $24 – i am yet to meet a lipsurgence shade that i don’t adore, but this one is definitely my favorite. it’s a pink pop of color that wakes up my entire face. the glossy texture is sheer and stain-y, but the balm-like formula means that i can put it onto naked lips. pure perfection.
amazonian clay 12-hour blush in achiote, $26 – coral blush can be real tricky. select one teensy shade to pink or too orange for you skin tone and you could be in big trouble. tarte’s honeysuckle option is very user-friendly. it’s a silky, matte peachy coral loaded with pink. i find it fresh and youthful.
be MATTEnificent eye & cheek palette, $36 – whoa. what is NOT to love about this gorgeous collection of universally flattering shades? with two liner/shadows, and lid options ranging from sand, taupe and peach to plum and rose, i would take this set to a deserted island. plus, that packaging? to die for.
amazonian clay BB tinted moisturizer, $36 – soft and creamy, with SPF, this BB tinted moisturizer really ups the ante. ingredients like chamomile, vitamins A, C, and E work to nourish, moisturize, and calm my sensitive skin. the light-to-medium coverage is perfect for when my skin is behaving and i can’t get enough of the glow.
lights, camera, lashes inner rim brightener, $19 – let’s just say that i could not survive without this product’s wizardry. i use it on my lower inner rims the mornings after a few too many libations (or just not enough sleep) and the rest of the world is none the wiser. it zaps redness and fakes an awake’ness that i haven’t found elsewhere.
do you love tarte’s offerings as much as me? please share any favorites that i may have missed!
the holiday season is hectic enough, but add in the need to monitor finishing touches on our new house and combine that with packing to move – you’ve got a normally calm beauty blogger running around like a crazy person. i need to keep some things simple, so i’ve been relying on these three products to make my face look put together, while my mind spins around in loops. the combination of a coral blush and a sheer berry lip is the easiest way to give off the impression of being cool and collected, and the addition of lots (and lots) of lash just seals the deal.
kevyn aucoin ‘the essential’ mascara, $32 the curved brush on this fat brush means that your lashes get all kinds of glamour. it perfectly fits the shape of my eye and delivers dark, lush lashes that are long and thick. there’s less of a need to layer so lashes don’t feel heavy and overdone. it comes off easily at the end of the day with no flakes or smudges while you wear.
tarte amazonian clay 12-hour blush in achiote, $26
when i’m looking for a new shade of blush, i always check this tarte lineup first. it’s natural (no matter what color you choose) and long lasting, adding beautiful color to your face without a lot of thought or effort. achiote is a light coral, a true peachy pink, that’s unique and super pretty on fair skins. it packs a silky matte finish and it’s a cinch to blend.
bite beauty lush lip treatment in watermelon, $24 i absolutely love this product. it’s part lip treatment, part sheer lip color, and all gorgeous. on my hunt for a new berry lip, i fell in love with the watermelon shade which is a medium cool-toned pink that wears down to a nice stain. the formula is hydrating and glossy, with an opaque creamy finish that you can easily build.
this new palette from tarte brings so many of spring’s best trends into one beautifully designed mirrored compact. inspired by the aqualilies synchronized swimmers (how glam!), every element of this cheek and eye color grouping is actually waterproof meaning that it’s perfect for staying pretty on vacation, at the beach and lounging poolside. the generously sized palette (about the size of a cd) has TONS of product inside and will be a perfect companion for you traveling beauties or those who want an easy way to wear a few of spring’s most gorgeous color trends.
i should note that i first fell in love with this collection for the color. it’s got six eyeshadows (including two of this season’s hottest shades: a seashell pink and an aqua blue), a champagne highlighter, a matte bronzer and a blush that perfectly blends pink and coral for the ultimate in universal flattery. if you’re a gal who likes to sport a natural complexion and interpret trends with a few subtle pops of color – there’s nothing not to love here. the colors easily last throughout the whole day without fading and i’ve been able to create countless, surprisingly sophisticated combinations. you can contour, highlight and play with eye looks that encompass both matte and shimmer shades – all in one place! well done, tarte.
in case you needed one more reason to invest in this high quality collection, i love knowing that tarte packs its products with amazonian clay and naturally-derived mineral pigments. while i’m certainly not consumed by all-natural organic beauty, it’s nice to know that these particular products have much less of the bad stuff in them than their counterparts.
all in all, we’re talking a great value for less than $40 and, if you trend toward the beauty minimalist, quite possibly all that you need in color for the season. pop a mascara and a tinted lip into your carry on and go get ‘em, girly.
reader #lipbombs are my favorite! don’t get me wrong, blogger bombs are great, but there’s something about seeing how an average jane spends her hard earned money on beauty. sharona is a great example of how to invest in some quality staples – plus i’m totally falling victim to her c.o. bigelow endorsement!
my vanity, makeup bag, and face see a constant rotation of products. with the volume and frequency of beauty being tested, it can be really tough to hang on to something for longer than a few weeks, let alone give it permanent residence in my bathroom’s beauty basket. low and behold, some products do actually stand the test of time. here are ten products that i posted about in 2012 that are still in my daily routine:
3. pattern body wash’s balance of effective cleaning and hydration makes it a permanent favorite in our coed shower. i love the scents and feel like i’m doing something good for my skin when i’m lathering up.
4. oribe’s dry texturizing spray is better than the best dry shampoo. it continues to make day two hair look better than day one. and the scent! yum.
5. sheswai’s nail lacquers come in the most playful shades. i still haven’t found anything that’s easier to apply than these, saving me bundles in salon manicures.
6. deborah lippmann’s the stripper to go is the most ingenious nail polish remover method. the little mitts may be pricy, but their portability and swift polish removal makes them completely worth the expense!
7. i still dab leila lou’s perfume oil in the crook of my elbows daily. the fragrance is flirty, fresh, and light, plus the rollerball makes it easy to travel with.
9. i will never go back to plain old boring hair ties! olivia’s mane message pretties crop up everywhere, from all around my condo to the depths of my handbags to my car cup holders. you’re sure to always find one on my wrist, too!
10. chanel’s precision eyelash curler has replaced my beloved shu ueumra and proven better than the original. lashes are left perfectly curled without the awkward crimp some other curlers leave behind.
have you discovered anything through the blog that has found a permanent home in your beauty bag this year?
i had so much fun getting all decked out with the ladies of wink boutique in dc and the amazing crowd of local bloggers and friends who joined us. the wink girls sure do know how to throw a party! they offered up flowing champagne, yummy snacks, and a generous 25% discount. add an adorably pregnant, super sweet makeup artist and amazing beauty products provided by my favorite brands, there was no doubt that we were going to have a ball!
pittsburg chocolatier, edward marc, provided milk and chocolate dark salted caramels (i was popping them in my mouth nonstop!) and gorgeous chocolate dipped peppermint sticks for our guests to take home. these sweets were such a hit! i loved the festive feel that they added to the evening.
liquid or gel liner is best for precision, you want to drag the liner along your lash line – it’s ok to rest your hand somewhere for balance!
to get the cat effect, the line dips up up towards the edge of your brow line; lauren’s trick is to actually start from the furthest point out and draw the line in towards your eye, from there it’s easy to thicken and fill in
smudge a deeb brown or plum over top to set the look and don’t worry too much about symmetry. (it’s makeup!) it’s also ok to use a little concealer in areas where you need to lift and clean up.
accentuate the cat eye with mascara by pulling the wand at an angle, out towards the side of your face instead of straight ahead. (i love this trick!)
for the bold red lip:
line and feather your lips with a red or neutral liner (just don’t go with anything darker), you can also highlight above the cupid’s bow for extra shape
choose a true red (like fire engine or cherry) – these look great on everyone
use a lip brush to apply the color, it’s easier and more precise, but if you do a good job lining your lips, this isn’t necessary
the finished product is surprisingly subtle and perfect for the holidays. here are two of my favorite ladies (the glossarie’s own maggie on the left, and my bestie jamie on the right, plus one shot of jamie and yours truly) rocking their red lips and cat eyes a la lauren:
thanks so much to everyone who came out to play! i hope to do it again in the spring.
my younger and wiser sister suggested a pretty gifty post centered around sephora’s amazing selection of combination sets and makeup kits that crop up by the dozen around the holidays. her exact words were “whoever said it was better to give than to receive clearly never got one of these!” she touts these selections for their wow impact and general bang-for-the-buck’ness – and who am i to argue with that kind of genius?
her picks for an extra beautiful holiday (in miniature) are as follows:
my inbox is bursting at the seams with lip bombs after last week’s inaugural post – i could not be more thrilled! i’m going to start sharing them weekly on wednesdays and possibly on other days, because they are just too good.
name: elizabeth internet home:wunderland she says: “i go a bit overboard, i must confess” number of products: 16 the bomb:
overboard? i beg to differ as i absolutely love this group! so many budget buys – i hope you pretty-for-a-penny beauties are taking notes. if you want your #lipbomb featured here in the glossarie, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. i would love to have you!
hi lovelies! i hope you’re having a gorgeous long weekend. i’ll be lounging at the pool all day with my kindle (currently loaded up with jane eyre – have you read it? slightly ashamed that i’m just getting to it at age 30!) and a collection of summer day essentials that i blogged over at gina’s tulle & combat boots last week. clickety click on over to learn more! (major holiday weekend bonus, just in time for summer: i scored those marc jacobs sunnies for $60 at the nordstrom half yearly sale yesterday.)
ps – the voting ends TOMORROW. i can’t believe my allure adventure is coming to a close. please vote today if you can!
