the bright lip

the glossarie - a bright lip wardrobe

let’s not beat around the bush: my middle is swelling at an alarming rate and while i’m all for growth in the name of progress, my new size is definitely taking some getting used to. in order to feel my absolute best (aside from my afternoon snack of broccoli chips – do not ask – and hummus), i am embracing the bright lip in an extra big way. i’ve always been a fan of a bold, bright shade on the lips, especially for an event or an evening out, but these days i find myself swiping on the brightness in the morning, too. i theorize that the pop of color draws eyes up towards my face and away from the belly, and whether that’s true or not, it sure does make me feel like a million polished-and-put-together bucks.

i’ve amassed a group of six not-for-the-faint-of-heart favorites that have been in constant rotation. from left to right:

mac huggable lip color in feeling amorous, $20
(no longer available :( similar option from stila)
soft and buttery, the easiest way to wear bright color because they are so comfy!

tarte power pigment in flush, $24
punched up pigment in a sheer berry shade that
moisturizes lips and doesn’t wander.

topshop lip bullet in heartbeat, $16
embrace orange lips with this satiny coral crayon -
it’s the easiest to apply and very bright.

lorac lip luxe in hot pink, $16
velvety smooth, powerfully pigmented, with anti-aging benefits to boot.

face stockholm for j.crew in peony pink, $20
(no longer available; similar shade = smile)
this stuff is like confidence in a tube! it’s the shade that i’m wearing
in my bio picture and it always incites endless compliments.

stila stay all day vinyl lip gloss in melon vinyl, $24
a full on burst of color and shine for when i feel like a gloss.
looks like lacquer, wears like iron!

i’d love to know: what’s your go to shade when you’re feelin’ a bright lip?

topshop eye gleam in winterfrost

topshop eye gleam in winterfrost

this might be the prettiest metallic cream shadow that i have ever laid eyes upon. the shade falls somewhere between a pearly white and a silver gray with a texture that’s super smooth and easy to blend. it’s ultra pigmented with the frosty finish that you would expect from something called “winterfrost” and while i originally thought that this would be something that stays specific to the holiday season, i’ve been thrilled to find how versatile and neutral this shade truly is.

you can get a fiercely pigmented silver eye or a sheer wash of color depending on how you handle it and, best of all, beyond just finding a happy home on my eyelids, this pot is proving useful for other things, too. i’ve taken to dotting it in the inner corner of my eye to highlight and brighten when i’m wearing other shadow shades (or nothing at all). it also makes my matte blush much more festive! i (ever so lightly) pat it over top of my cheek apples for a highlighted touch that’s not too glittery.

if gilded lids are on your list or you’re looking for a little shimmer, this is your new go-to. in short, this shadow is insanely wearable with a feminine glamour that i’ve been craving for party season.

a few favorites

a few favorites

it’s been one of those weeks where the winning beauty discoveries just did not stop coming and i’ve been pulling these five products out of my beauty basket almost daily since i brought them in to the glossarie test lab.

physicians formula mineral airbrushing blush spf 30, $10.79
the perfect pink in a smooth, easy-to-wear formula that also packs spf 30. this gorgeously packaged blush is so summer-right, i can’t even stand it. (and if that doesn’t sell you, there’s the cutest ever mini kabuki brush hiding underneath the blush pan!)

topshop brow pencil, $12
i am still letting my brows grow in a bit (it’s painful) and this pencil has been a godsend. the spoolie brush is substantial enough to tame my unruly arches and the pencil formula is so creamy. it’s easy to blend and impossible to overdo.

jouer pearl lip enhancer in rose, $16
jouer’s classic lip enhancer is ultra moisturizing and these new tinted versions are just as soothing. the rose pearl shade is the ultimate glossy nude and it’s been polishing off my everyday face with just the right touch of color and shine.

21 drops 10 calm essential oil rollerball, $29
confession: i’m not the most relaxed person and i hate to fly. this essential oil saved me on a recent flight and i’ve kept it close ever since. a couple of drops in the palm of my hands, cupped over my face, and a deep breath in – all is right with the world.

dr. lewinn by kinerase instant perfecting b.b. cream, $15.97
a complete surprise, this bb cream blends beautifully and blurs away imperfections. it’s hydrating, but very lightweight and includes spf (both very important for dc’s ugly summer weather). my skin looks bright and glowy and it feels like i’ve got nothing on.

lip crayon love

lip crayon love

i love a good lip crayon. super easy to carry, a cinch to apply without a mirror and thanks to the narrower point, you get beautifully defined lips along with gorgeous color. pigment is often richer and more true to the product than with traditional lipstick, too. basically, it’s the ultimate in fuss-free beauty so it’s no wonder that i’ve got them coming out of my ears in all shades and brand names. but, something wonderful has happened to the lip crayon lately: it’s gone glossy! now my favorite way to apply lip color comes in a slicker, shiny finish that adds an element of sophistication to the plain old lip crayon. i’ve been stocking up on them and i’ve currently got five on constant rotation:

mark. color me in lip crayon in punchline, $12
a gorgeous fruit punch shade that lasts all day and leaves a soft stain behind

ilia lipstick crayon in karma chameleon, $24
a fiery coral packed with healing oils

topshop lip crayon in secret party, $14
a vivid raspberry with a touch of shimmer – such a unique color

nars satin lip in rikugien, $25
a super moisturizing rose pink, love the way this one feels

trish mcevoy essential balm in gorgeous pink, $38
an ultra light formula in girlie pink that brightens up my whole complexion

get your spring glow in a duo

left: le metier de beaute blushing bronzed duet in romeo and juliet

right: topshop sandstorm cheek duo in desert sun

we are finally feeling the heat in dc this week and my mind is all-a-wander with how to get an early summer glow. a blush-bronzer duo is an absolute must and i lust this $65 version from le metier de beaute. it’s half soft pink, half tawny bronzer and all sorts of gorgeous. there’s something about being able to use one product individually as blush and bronze or blend both sides together to give the illusion of a day in the sunshine that tickles my fancy.

if $65 still seems like a stretch even with all of those multitasking qualities, topshop has just released their sandstorm collection with a beautiful marbleized cheek duo front and center. desert sun is the perfect bronze pink, almost an exact duplicate of the le metier at just $24.50.

with two perfect options for sunny skin, whatever your budget, i see a youthful glowing complexion in your spring forecast!

april bag + balm

bag: rennes five inch small wallet pouch in liac, $40

balm: topshop balm in sheen, $8

you don’t need me to tell you that pouches are all the rage, so why not toss your pretties into this little lovely? it’s made of the softest distressed lambskin, complete with a gorgeous brass zipper and adorable lining. it also comes in bunches of other beautiful colors. the topshop balm is the perfect thing to tuck inside – it’s glossy, moisturizing, and sheen is the best your-lips-but-better blush hue. it goes on smooth for a soft, shiny finish and, as a bonus, it kind of tastes like watermelon jolly ranchers. i’ve been wearing this daily and i think it’s safe to say that i will definitely finish the pot i’ve got and repurchase.

what do you think of this combo? looks like it belongs in my kind of easter basket!
