we tried it: sephora lip IQ match2

sephora lip iq in norfolk, va

if you aren’t familiar with the pantone color IQ matching at sephora, they basically use this little device to detect your skin tone and match you with any foundation in the store. it’s magical, because the machine not only matches your skin color, but also your undertones – so it’s a very precise and accurate match.

when i heard that sephora had expanded their services to lip color IQ matching, i was pumped. i always struggle with which shade of nude will look best on my skin tone or what red suits me best and won’t make my teeth look yellow (eek!). so, i decided to step into my local sephora and check it out for myself.

first off, a quick shoutout, because the service that i received at the sephora in norfolk, va was amazing! the cast member who helped me was so sweet and helpful. we started off doing the IQ match just as if i was getting matched for a foundation. she took the IQ machine and scanned my forehead, cheeks and neck. then, she took me over to the computer where i chose if i wanted to look for nudes, reds or berry shades. i chose nudes sicne they are my go-to and voila! a screen popped up with a dozen lip options deemed to be my perfect match. my favorite part was emailing the whole list to myself – it’s like a little set of #lipgoals.

after we discussed my results (browns and mauves) we shopped for a lip color to try. i chose kat von d everlasting liquid lipstick in lolita II and the cast member applied it on my lips also using a tarte lip liner. she educated me as she was applying and she even took the time to over-line my upper lip à la khloe and kylie, something i have always been too chicken to try.

overall the experience was awesome! it completely exceeded my expectations and i am lo-ving my new lip shade. if you’re sick of wandering the sephora aisles with a row of swatches on your arm, i highly recommend taking five minutes to explore the lip IQ.

paula’s choice CALM redness relief6

Photo Feb 29, 11 30 43 AM

the products in this post were provided to me by the
manufacturer on behalf of pretty in my pocket inc.

my skin can best be described as pink, with pale undertones. i have never been someone who turns golden brown in the sun, and my face looks bright tomato red after any sort of vigorous exercise. (people have actually come up to me at the gym to ask if i’m ok – it’s super cool.)

i always took my redness as fact and never even considered trying to do something to counteract my blush-y appearance, but when i had the opportunity to test out CALM redness relief from paula’s choice, i leapt at the chance. i had such an amazing experience with the brand back in december, my hopes were high that this could help to bring a soothing cure.

Photo Feb 29, 11 24 47 AM

the thing that i love about paula’s choice is that they work really hard to make sure that you understand how to use these products – and they give you tons of options to mix and match daily combinations based on your specific skin condition. this kit comes in two formulations depending on if you are oily or dry (because redness takes no prisoners) and the full regimen rings in at six products total. depending on what other products are in your current mix, you can use things more or less frequently, alternating with your normal regime until you find the right balance. for me, switching the toner and serum from this group with another set worked beautifully. i am in love with the moisturizer and spf which i have been using daily.

all of the products are lightweight, non-greasy and most importantly, non-irritating. they feel blissful on contact – especially the toner, the serum, the moisturizer and the spf. i have to be extra careful when testing new treatments and exfoliants because they can leave my skin tight and dry, but the weekly BHA 1% lotion from this collection has made all of the difference in redness for me. my morning face is now neutral! no more redness, smooth to the touch – i can actually go makeup free without feeling self conscious about my skin’s pink tendencies.

the undeniably positive results have been a very pleasant surprise and i would like to share the love! you can get 20% off and free shipping on the entire CALM collection from paula’s choice with code PRIMPSPRING.

la roche-posay effaclar bb blur0

la roche-posay effaclar bb blur

i have to say that this one really shocked me. i had the highest hopes for la roche-posay effaclar bb blur, because it has been on my wish list ever since the internet began raving about it last march. so, when it arrived this week, i tore into it. at first glance, there are a few reasons why this bb cream should not be a winner – but break out the tiara, because it’s truly amaze.

off the bat, i was very surprised at the texture. it comes out of the tube as a fluffy mousse – far different from any other bb i have tried, and in my hand, the color is way darker than my skin tone. i still grabbed my best brush, swept it all over and whoa whoa whoa! the results were stunning.

what started out as a dark stripe of color vanished into my skin, creating one of the best shade matches i have ever seen. please note that you have to blend carefully, otherwise you will end up with varying tones across your skin, but i promise that it smooths on easily. the texture mattifies in a subtle way and (just as it claims) it blurs and erases all of my imperfections. the finished look reminds me of what my skin looks like after a talented makeup artist has had her way with my face. it’s completely effortless, but seamless and beautiful – like it would appear after you used primer, concealer, a foundation and powder to achieve that perfect base.

this is “woke up like this” beauty in a tube and i am ashamed that this best-kept secret has evaded me for so long.

everyday lip treats from ChapStick®5

ChapStick®

sometimes the best solution is the most simple. for that reason and many otheres, i have long been in love with all things coming from the land of ChapStick®. judging by all of your #lipbombs, i know i’m not alone.

for me, it all started with the black-and-white-tubed original. my clever mother pawned it off on me as a beauty product when i was in the 4th grade. “oh, you want to wear makeup? here you go, honey.” well played, eileen – because an addiction has been fueling everyday since. from there, it was a slippery slope. i quickly discovered the subtle tint and delicious taste of the cherry flavor, then it was on to sophisticated spearmint.

more recently, i have fallen hard for hydration lock (still a go-to!) and the brilliantly dual-ended day and night combination (my current favorite). my beach tote is littered with sun defense (which, in a pinch can soothe a kitchen burn) and this time of year, nothing soothes like the moisturizer version.

this brand is truly integrated into my daily life and it keeps my lips soft and smooth – no matter what kind of adventures come my way. it’s a tried and true essential – and i am predicting that in light of our amorous past, ChapStick® and i have one beautiful future ahead.

GIVEAWAY TIME! if your lips are feeling the winter burn, i want to share the love. enter below to win a fun sampling of ChapStick® products.

the ChapStick® product, information and gift have been provided by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. thank you (so much!) for supporting the brands that support the glossarie!

Smashbox Primer Water0

clear bottle of makeup setting spray

when i read that smashbox had released a primer water i thought the concept was a bit far fetched. i mean, not to knock the fine people at smashbox, but what made this water so special? could i use some fresh dasani and save myself the $32?

well, needless to say i am eating my own sassy words because this water works. after my non-believing ways had me certain that no water on earth could extend my makeup, i was dead wrong. not only does smashbox primer water ensure my makeup gets longer wear time, but it actually refreshes my look and sets it in place.

now, i am using this spray every day before i do my makeup. i hold the bottle about eight inches from my face and let it sink in for five minutes or so. then, i do my makeup as usual and afterwards, i mist my face again, settling any powder and giving me an airbrushed, luminous finish. seriously. is this magic water?

in case you’re curious, the primer water is silicon-free, alcohol-free and oil-free. it is packed with revitalizing electrolytes to wake up skin and restore moisture – kind of like an energy drink for your skin. it gives me a nice, hydrated canvas to put my makeup on and keeps it looking fresh and luminous all day without getting oily. so, although i did not have high hopes for this product, i was happily proved wrong!

rusk elixir mist6

rusk elixir mist

so, here’s the situation with my hair. it was life-giving during my pregnancy. so thick and strong and healthy. then it was somehow even better after delivering lou and through nursing, but once i stopped, all hell broke loose and it has been a sad state of affairs ever since. it’s thin and limp and blah – and winter is just making all of those things worse.

typically, i alternate between cleansers / conditioners / stylers made for volumizing and those used for damaged hair. since it’s gotten thinner, i have to wash and style it more frequently which means more exposure to my hot tools. i try not to use anything heavy when styling, but no matter that i choose i still have that gross, slick feeling on my hands after applying a styler to my wet hair. i know you know what i’m talking about here.

for the past couple of weeks, i have been using rusk elixir mist and hello! there is something very refreshing and different about this product. for one, it’s an incredibly light and fine spray – mist is the perfect word for it. (i will note that i actually hop back into the shower to apply because it’s a little hard to control.) after i’m done running my fingers through my freshly misted hair, my hands feel clean. no residue! nothing! no need to use my husband’s towel as a grease rag. (because hell if i will allow my acne-prone face to touch something laced with hair product – am i the only one guilty of this?)

after blowing it dry, my hair is so smooth and shiny that i can get away with leaving it un-straightened. i can actually (gasp!) embrace a bit of my natural texture. the product is hydrating, but non greasy. i love the heat protection and i love the way that my hair feels on days one, two and (if i’m lucky) three.

if my fellow flat-haired gals are on the hunt for something new and different, i am highly recommending this stuff. at under $20 it’s the real deal and i’m pretty shocked that such an innovative product has been flying so under the radar.

tarte tarteist™ lip paints0

tarteist lip paint fomo

want to rock the matte lip, but find it to be a bit high maintenance and (worse!) drying? fear not, for the team at tarte has it all figured out.

tarte lip paints are hands down the best liquid lipstick that have ever touched my lips. they are ultra pigmented with a mousse-like texture that helps the paint glide onto the lips. they are so rich in pigment that only one layer is needed and the applicator makes application effortless, leaving you with that perfect matte lip – hassle free.

if you struggle with comfortable wear, i can confirm that this lip paint will not budge. you may eat / drink / chat all day long and it will still be there when your day is over. for a bit of proof, i gave these a good long test, fell asleep and woke up the following morning with a bold lip still intact. i was very impressed that this liquid lipstick does not crumble up on your lips like most matte lips, it stays smooth and flawless for what feels like forever.

now, let’s briefly touch on color range. you can grab this formula from tarte in everything from a natural nude to a deep winter-perfect burgundy, and even a gorgeous lilac for a fresh pop of spring color. as a final note, the cute names are a fun detail that cannot go unmentioned – my favorite shades are manbun (dark berry) and fomo (mauve).

i know that this trend can be a bold concept because formulas can be drying and hard on your lips. i promise that the tarte lip paints will change your mind completely. with this smudge-proof, fade-proof, hydrating and lightweight option, i predict that you’ll be rocking a stunning matte lip in no time.

glass + metal vanity organizer0

50301450

target does it again!

this time, the big red bullseye is bringing a chic level of sophistication to my bathroom with this glass and metal vanity organizer by threshold. in truth, my vanity has been looking a little flea market-y lately with an odd combination of containers and random mugs holding my makeup. it was barely getting the job done, making it very difficult to find all of my favorites and causing me to store most of my products in a cluttered pile next to the sink.

not the best!

so, when i spotted this beauty on the target shelves, i grabbed it immediately. along with looking clean and bright, the copper and glass combo is super spacious, holding all of my daily and special-occasion products. i am in love with the way that it keeps all of my best goods in one place, but everything is in plain sight, so that nothing gets neglected.

to complete the organized vision and further clear up the clutter, i bought this coordinating 3 compartment tray. it’s the perfect spot for my moisturizer, toner, micellar water, cotton pads, nightly lip mask and go-to blowout spray. now, i feel as though there are no excuses for a messy vanity – and to complete the project, this marble canister is next on my list (for brush storage).

how do you keep your products organized?

make up for ever ultra hd invisible cover foundation4

Make-Up-For-Ever-Ultra-HD-foundation-117-y225-review-photos

why is the perfect primer so impossibly hard to find?

while the clarity of my skin has dramatically improved, i still find myself fighting an unsightly texture fiasco that can only be attributed to my inability to drink an appropriate amount of water, lack of sleep and frequent plane travel. i want something that delivers a matte radiance without clogging my pores and creating heinous breakouts – and it’s harder to nail down than you would think.

while on the primer hunt, i have been testing this new-ish MUFE foundation. let me say that i love the coverage here – and when you layer it appropriately, my face is photo-ready flawless. it’s beautiful for a special occasion, but it just doesn’t have quite enough oomph for my everyday face.

still, i totally knew that MUFE was on to something, and as i was clicking around learning more about other influencers’ thoughts on the stuff, i found a ton of people who mentioned using this foundation as a base/primer.

GENIUS.

i have been laying down one pump of this underneath of my l’oreal true match and the results are jaw-dropping. it looks clean and fresh yet still like you’re not wearing a drop of anything. it’s kind of amazing.

i use one brush for both products – a recent treat-myself beauty from sigma – and i can’t recommend this trio highly enough. the combination gives me that perfectly pulled together, flawless look that doesn’t feel at all like i’m wearing multiple layers or like i’m trying too hard. it’s a simple solution to one of my longest-running beauty problems and i’m hoping it can provide some salvation for you, too.

NARSissist cheek studio palette0

blush and bronzer palette

this pretty palette walked into my life two weeks ago and hasn’t left my face since. in one set of seven shades, NARS has packed in a matte highlighter, a contour shade, a bronzer and four beautiful blushes. what more does a girl possibly need?

before you start drooling, let’s get right down to business, starting with the top row that contains the matte highlight, contour and bronzer. the matte highlight is a creamy off-white shade and is perfect to set the under eyes, also doubling as an eyeshadow. the contour shade is ashy – not too red or too grey, ideal for creating that shadow under the cheek bones and forehead. next, the bronzer…oh, the bronzer! the famous laguna bronzer is a cult favorite and for good reason. laguna is the ultimate shade for warming up the skin without looking orange or muddy and blends like a dream.

are you still with me? because we haven’t even talked blushes.

NARS is known for their amazing blushes and this palette gives you four of the leading ladies. each one has a luminous finish, giving the cheeks a subtle glow. there are two light pink shades and two deeper mauve colors, all very blendable and, best of all, they really last! they stay all day, giving my face a nice flush and a beautiful glow.

overall, the NARSissist palette has quickly become my go-to. it is a one-stop investment for bronzer, contour, highlight and blush. please note that this beauty is limited edition and only available in sephora, so if you like what you see you’d better grab it while you can!
