my ten favorite product finds of 201310

it’s been a very good year for the glossarie and the growth of my beauty bag and makeup routine is further proof of all the wonderful products that i was introduced to in 2013. ten products have become everyday, you-will-have-to-pry-them-out-of-my-cold-dead-hands favorites. these are the bars against which all other products in their category are measured. so without further ado, here are the best of the best:

top 10 of 2013

*

1 – chapstick hydration lock

2 –stila countless color pigment in lyric

3 – mark. make it rich lip crayon – how these never made it into their own post,
i will never know! coverage is creamy and intense, super comfortable and long-wearing. peony is my winter shade of choice, with punch being my year-round go-to.

4 – maybelline volum’express the falsies big eyes

5 – smashbox camera ready cc cream

6 – bite lush lip tint in orchard – another product that snuck into the top 10 without a post. this glossy, moisturizing, hot pink is the one thing that wakes me up each
morning. i’m obsessed with the formula and the color is so poppy and fresh.

7 – benefit gimme brow

8 – my partnership with simple skincare in 2013 was a true blessing for my problem skin! i have fallen in love with every product in the range and i love the calm, clear effects
that each one delivers with no surprises as to how my skin will react.

9 – real techniques expert face brush

10 – jouer perfume oil

is there something that you discovered via the glossarie
that’s still holding steady in your daily beauty routine?

maggie’s top 10 of 20132

maggie's top 10 of 2013

1 – i remembered that i had eyebrows this year, and that it might be nice to take care of them and even highlight them every once in awhile. it cosmetics brow power perfector is the 5-in-1 powder gel pencil that came to my brow rescue, serving as a fill-in powder, pencil, taming gel, conditioning treatment, and brow brush all in one (i’ve been using the the ‘universal taupe’ shade to define and fill in my arches).

2 – i briefly noted my love for the stella by stella mccartney rollerball perfume here, but the quick mention does not do nearly enough justice to how much i use this bad boy. the sweet and subtle combo of rose, amber and mandarin is my daily perfume and in my purse at all times.

3 – who knew that a free birthday gift from sephora would become one of my top ten beauty staples this year? i swipe benefit’s watt’s up! highlighter under my brows and on my cheekbones every day to wake my face up.

4 – sally hansen’s super shine has become a favorite for DIY manicures. i know matte nails were trendy this past year, but i still love a shiny fnish, and this top coat does the trick (while really making color last – we’re talking a solid five days).

5 – maybelline’s color elixir in signature scarlet has become my new go-to red lip, adding a glossy, youthful twist to an always classic look.

6 – the super dark, completely clump-free and layer-able smashbox photo op eye brightening mascara is now my daily mascara – i love how it separates and defines each lash. a blend of blue pigments in the formula make lashes seems so defined in contrast to the whites of your eyes. i haven’t found a mascara this good since dior’s diorshow.

7 – i’m a sucker for celebrity endorsements, so when i heard about lauren conrad’s hair stylist’s can’t-live-without product, i had to get my hands on it. i’ve been spritzing healthy sexy hair soy tri-wheat leave-in conditioner on after every shower and i am loving the results: soft, noticeably shinier locks (but never greasy). by restoring hair’s ph balance, it essentially presses the “restart” button for your hair. since i’ve started using it i’ve had multiple friends ask me if i’ve gotten my hair cut – that’s how healthy and fresh it’s made my hair look.

8 – like lara, i’ve become addicted to simple’s revitalizing eye roll-on. it’s become my little morning wake-up ritual, after i’ve washed my face and moisturized, to sweep this cooling rollerball underneath my eyes. it de-puffs, wakes me up immediately and is the perfect primer for my undereye concealer.

9 – speaking of undereye concealer, benefit’s fake up was my new best friend in 2013. this super moisturizing concealer hides even the darkest of my circles, and, as it promises, never creases. what a welcome addition to my makeup bag!

10 – i’d heard so much about the magical josie maran pure argan oil, and i have to say it lives up to its reputation. a single drop of it on damp hair makes me feel like my split ends have disappeared, and no other product has made my hair feel quite this silky. the double-whammy oil can also be used to moisturize your skin and has been a lifesaver for my dry winter cuticles.

christmas wishes4

christmas wishes

*
confession: the stocking is always my favorite part of christmas because that’s where all of the beauty goodies are usually hiding. i have a swarm of cosmetic wishes this year and i can’t wait to see which ones come true.

1 – every celebrity and makeup artist under the sun claims cle de peau concealer ($70) to be life changing. it wins at everything from blending to coverage, texture and flawless concealing. it’s about time i bit the bullet. i need it.

2 – i need another neutral shadow like i need a hole in the head, but something about nars mississippi mermaid ($24) is calling to me. it’s the perfect champagne for an overall lid color, inner corner highlight and for brow bone brightening.

3 – these new blush cremes from clarins ($30) are gorgeous. if i could, i would hoard all four shades and cocktail them together for the prettiest in natural and smooth cheek color. bonus: natural oils and vitamin e give them a hydrating leg up over other options.

4 – this bottle promises volume, smoothness, conditioning, strength, and polish, all in one oil-free formula. with weightless shine, manageable body, heat protection, and even static control, living proof perfect hair day ($26) is everything i could ever want and more.

5 – i have learned to love applying my foundation with a dense rounded brush. make up for ever medium highlighter brush ($37) was recently recommended to me for the ultimate in flawless coverage and i can’t get my hands on it fast enough.

6 – overnight hydration masks are my sole winter skin salvation. dr. jart water fuse water-max sleeping mask ($48) locks in moisture bringing new meaning to “beauty sleep.” i love that it does not need to be washed off and works its magic all night long.

7 – and also, world peace.

happy christmas beauties! what’s on your wishlist this year?

topshop eye gleam in winterfrost4

topshop eye gleam in winterfrost

this might be the prettiest metallic cream shadow that i have ever laid eyes upon. the shade falls somewhere between a pearly white and a silver gray with a texture that’s super smooth and easy to blend. it’s ultra pigmented with the frosty finish that you would expect from something called “winterfrost” and while i originally thought that this would be something that stays specific to the holiday season, i’ve been thrilled to find how versatile and neutral this shade truly is.

you can get a fiercely pigmented silver eye or a sheer wash of color depending on how you handle it and, best of all, beyond just finding a happy home on my eyelids, this pot is proving useful for other things, too. i’ve taken to dotting it in the inner corner of my eye to highlight and brighten when i’m wearing other shadow shades (or nothing at all). it also makes my matte blush much more festive! i (ever so lightly) pat it over top of my cheek apples for a highlighted touch that’s not too glittery.

if gilded lids are on your list or you’re looking for a little shimmer, this is your new go-to. in short, this shadow is insanely wearable with a feminine glamour that i’ve been craving for party season.

best of 2013: mario badescu giveaway0

AcneRepairKit

although technically, i discovered mb very late in 2012, my love for his products truly developed over the last twelve months. you already know how much my face loves these products. when nothing else works, my skin finds sweet salvation in the cleansers, moisturizers, and treatments, not one of which has ever disappointed. i recommend the regimen all of the time for its friendly price point and adaptability to every skin type. it’s that good.

in celebration of my fabulous year with mario badescu, the ever-generous brand team has given me one acne repair kit to give away. i swear by the drying lotion to clear up spots overnight (and i even dab it on while getting ready for extra fighting power) and the drying cream is perfect for spreading over more general areas (ahem, chin, jawline) when you feel a zit or three coming on. the buffering lotion is a godsend for cystic acne, and this trio together is one fierce plan of acne attack.

if your skin is troublesome and you’re at your wits’ end, or if you are looking for some serious weapons to add to your skincare mix, this kit is for you. enter through the link below and bring on the clear skin for 2014!

three fragrance favorites0

three fragrance favorites

there’s something nice about the right perfume. i love the way that scent is such a personal choice and i rarely find two women who have same “signature.” regardless of the time of year, whether my skin is breaking out or flaking off, my favorite perfume always works and somehow, always makes me feel pulled together. everything else about my day could be falling apart, but if i’m wearing perfume, i’m doing a-ok.

i find that my fragrance preferences are changing constantly and that i am more closely related to having perfume A.D.D. than i am committing to a true signature scent. lately, there are three gorgeous smells that have captured my attention and i’ve been rotating them together for the prettiest aromatic bouquet.

kate spade ‘live colorfully’ rollerball, $24
this sachet has so many of my favorite things! it layers florals with citrus for a playful combination that’s super easy to wear. things like mandarin, water lily, and anise are paired with grown-up gardenia and tahitian vanilla to create a flirty and fun fragrance. i can’t get enough.

marc jacobs honey, $22 – $92
i have overlooked almost every other mj fragrance because i just wasn’t impressed, but honey has a punchy freshness laced with a girly sweetness that has completely stolen my heart. it’s bright (green pear, orange blossom) and warm (smooth woods), with a honeysuckle base that cheers me all day long.

lady gaga fame, $17
a surprisingly wearable scent from mother monster, i am still shocked at how much i like this mass’tige celebrity perfume. it’s a musky (incense) floral (jasmine, orchid) that’s kept light with the addition of apricot and honey. the combination is feminine and interesting, not at all overpowering or old lady.

soap stones by pelle4

how gorgeous are these soap gems? beyond being beautiful, they are handcrafted, and all natural, made of vegetable based ingredients. they perform well, leaving hands feeling so soft while looking super pretty sitting sink side in your powder room. the colors are brilliant with scents coming from the addition of essential oils.

each of the seven scents come in three sizes: nugget (2 oz, $8), stone (5 oz, $16), and rock (10 oz, $32). they are hand cut in pelle’s brooklyn studio and presented in beautiful drawstring bags, making one perfectly pretty present.  i am obsessed with these for gift giving (hello, happy hostess!) and i love the fact that they are made in the u.s. of a.

you can shop the full collection, including a complete set of nuggets for $48, at b-glowing.

happy merry making!

andré jourdan volume shampoo + conditioner2

andre jourdan volume

the fact of the matter is that there comes a time in every girl’s life when her favorite shampoo and conditioner just stop working. chalk it up to (magical?) changes in the makeup of our scalp or maybe even the physics of our showers, but it’s a phenomenon that defies explanation. because of this pesky little problem, i’ve always found it helpful to rotate two sets of shampoo and conditioner to keep my hair at its best. my obsession with use me products continues and i love that they are all natural, but what to add into the mix?

when alyson from the average girl’s guide introduced me to andré jourdan’s line of products infused with organic ingredients, i knew i had to give them a try. initial research told me that they are sulfate-free (my hair behaves so much better when things are sulfate-free!) with added vitamins and proteins to to keep my hair and scalp healthy.

performance-wise, even though the shampoo doesn’t lather up much, i can still feel my oily hair getting an extra deep cleaning. (note: i am obsessed with the way this stuff smells – like an elegant bouquet of flowers, but not at all heavy.) the conditioner is ultra lightweight but does a surprisingly impressive job of detangling and moisturizing my hair the exact right amount, without weighing it down. out of the shower, my hair blows dry and straightens beautifully. the finished product is soft and bouncy with a touch of added shine and a burst of delicious scent. i get a solid two days of wear and i definitely notice that my hair is far less damaged and dry since introducing andré’s products into my routine.

if you typically invest in salon-quality products and you’re looking for something new to bring to your shower shelves, i recommend giving this line a look. it has all of the quality performance of my favorite salon brands, without any of the harmful ingredients.

psst…a little birdie told me that new email subscribers get 30% off their purchase, too!

a surprising winter lip4

revlon blase apricot

i love when maggie and i are in each other’s heads.

as proof of our beauty blogger esp, i had just drafted a little something for you on my favorite new lip color when i was trolling through her pending posts and BOOM! i find that she has fallen for the exact same shade.

the lipstick of the hour is revlon’s classic moon drops in blasé apricot. maggie was taken with its lovely, light coral shade that is very easy to layer. you can go easy on the application or really pile it on, depending on how bright you want to be. she especially loves it under a sheer gloss for a fresh color pop to brighten these gloomy winter days.

i couldn’t agree more! for me, it provides that burst of color without being unseasonably bright. the formula is super hydrating and the color goes on completely opaque so coverage is beautiful and true to what you see in the bullet. wear time could be longer, but the fact that it doesn’t dry lips out at all or leave a clown mouth as it goes outweighs the need to reapply.

on my fair skin, blasé apricot translates to a melon and it’s especially complimentary to all of the grays and cobalts that i brought into my closet this season. it’s perfect to wear from day to evening, going with everything from t-shirts to cocktail dresses and … well, we’re obsessed.
