simple soothing facial toner8

simple soothing facial toner

this blog has never been about me telling you what you must do. i’m not here to push product or change your habits, but i will always be sure to tell you what works for me – and one thing that has truly worked for me is adding a toner to my skincare routine. toner is a product that is the subject of much debate in the skincare world. do you need it? is it useless? there are arguments for each side of the story, but in my opinion it has made all of the difference and here’s why.

i have found that the addition of toner in the evenings, after i wash my face and before i layer on a night cream or serum, helps to remove excess oil and dead skin cells, along with any traces of makeup that i may have missed. it is an essential second step in my routine and it also helps my third-step application to soak in more quickly.

simple soothing facial toner is the perfect solution for me. it has witch hazel, a calming anti-inflammatory ingredient for sensitive skin, and chamomile to soften and soothe. i soak a cotton pad in the good stuff and sweep it all over my skin. it’s formulated without alcohol which, in my opinion, makes toners way too drying, even for those of us with oily skin.

so the next time you find yourself debating whether you should add a toner to your routine, think about your skin. the toner market is vast and varied, with options available for anyone. i find simple’s to be the most user friendly, serving anyone with dry, oily or combination skin. i know for me that it’s been a great addition to my routine that is always battling acne-prone skin and has made a marked difference on my oily and oft clogged pores.

tell me: do you use a toner?

recipe for a good hair day (and then some)1

mark. + davines + klorane = perfect hair day

my hair products are constantly rotating and sometimes i find myself forgetting which combination of things was (at least recently) giving me my best hair. there has been an extra surplus of hair potions shuffling their way through the glossarie hq as of late, but three of them truly stand out as awesome little performers. behold, your recipe for a good hair day – and days to come:

mark. prep for it hair primer, $16 – i didn’t know that primer was a step my hair was missing, but this spray lotion protects from heat styling, pumps up the volume when layered with my other styling products and gives my hair a grit that keeps it from getting greasy on day two – extending my style for an additional 24 hours.

davines this is a relaxing moisturizing fluid, $26 – this new collection from davines is as beautiful on the outside as the products are effective on the inside. the lightweight lotion leaves my hair smooth and shiny and cuts my flat iron time in half. it relaxes my curls and gives me my absolute best hair, the kind that hangs just how i want it.

klorane dry shampoo with nettle, $18 – finally a dry shampoo made just for those of us with oily hair. this aerosol spray zaps oil and gives serious oomph. instead of layering product on top of my greasy roots, the addition of nettle extract actually fights grease on days two and three to deliver day one hair all over again.

ps – for another fun tip on how to keep the good hair going, check out my latest mark. video :)

polish favorites for fall6

fall polish favorites

*

my nails have easily become my favorite accessory and it’s definitely the place where i love to play with color the most. i find that a fresh manicure (even if i diy) can change my whole mood and since i tend to talk with my hands a lot my paint jobs are always one of the first things people notice and comment on. i’m loving many a gorgeous polish tone for fall, here are just a handful of my current go-to’s:

mischo beauty empire state of mind, $18
this stunning line was started by a sweet dc local. her formulas are
gorgeous and the shades are selling out fast, so don’t delay!

essie parka perfect, $8.50
i’m drawn to pale blue grays and i love the slight shimmer in essie’s version,
which goes on like silk and wears like iron (as essie herself once told me).

marc jacobs petra, $18
a multi-toned metallic bronze is festive enough for a holiday party but neutral
enough for daytime. marc’s formula brings high pigment with lots of shine.

tom ford african violet, $32
i know, this one is a splurge, but can you really put a price on gorgeous
plum perfection that will keep your nails chic for seasons to come?

zoya dahlia, $9
if you haven’t tried zoya’s pixiedust you are missing out. the formula is virtually
chip-free and easily removes without the usual struggle. loving this black beauty!

butter london leccy
what’s prettier than an opal flecked overcoat? possibly nothing. if you buy
one polish for the season, make it this one because it transforms all others.

day to night: lip balm2

day to night: lip balm
*

’tis suddenly the season for hand cream and lip balm. there’s only a slight chill in the air and it seems that my lips are instantly void of all moisture. thank goodness that each season there is always a bounty of fresh options in the lip balm department. for fall, i have embraced the high-low strategy and invested in a duo that is keeping things in check.

during the day, i reach for yes to’s new naturally smooth lip balm in grapefruit. it’s light and moisturizing in an energizing flavor with ingredients like aloe, cocoa butter and shea butter that bring major bang for the buck to this $3 option. i love the sleek oval shape that fits everywhere (even in my wallet) without bulking things up and makes it extra easy to apply.

before bed, i slather on marc jacobs’ lip lock moisture balm. it’s rich and buttery, instantly soothing my lips after i wash and tone my face (which always leaves them dry). it feels indulgent at the end of a long day and i swear that it’s made an impact on my lips’ moisture levels. while it’s not the cheapest, you definitely get what you pay for – including ultra chic packaging.

what’s keeping your lips hydrated, from day to night?

orla kiely at target9

if you don’t know orla kiely, then you definitely should. she’s a contemporary irish designer by way of london who has especially made a name for herself when it comes to unique retro prints. she’s known for her laminate cloth handbags which are the true essence of this darling collection, currently at target. when i spotted these absolutely adorably patterned cosmetic bags, i wanted to stuff all of them into my cart at once! i love that they are fabulous, functional, and pieces that are true orla originals at a fraction of the price. truth be told, i would pay top dollar because the organizers, zip pouches and train cases would make a serious impact on my travel situation. i’m going back to get the double zip ($16.99), the train case ($19.99), and the organizer ($16.99) for sure. my advice? if you spot these beauties at your local  target you should definitely scoop a couple up – because i don’t imagine that they will last long!

laura mercier rouge nouveau lip colours2

laura mercier rouge nouveau

*

if you know me, you know i’m not one to get overly excited about a lipstick launch. i certainly appreciate the advancements that brands are making, but i usually just feel kind of “eh” when i test things.

that is *so* not the case with these new lips from laura mercier.

coming in three different finishes – matte, sheer, and creme – the formula is wax-free which means that my lips can actually breathe while wearing it. the pigments are powerful and the texture is smooth and weightless. i love the skinny bullets which make it extra easy to get these in the right place and they last a really long time with very little transfer onto wine glasses, etc. i’ve already honed in on three favorites, one from each finish, that i have been wearing in constant rotation (shown, from left to right):

mod (matte coral red) – i have *finally* found my favorite red and no one is more shocked than me that it’s a matte. this is the least drying matte (more of a satin) that i have ever tried and the color really brightens my skin tone.

chic (creme magenta) – this is a gorgeous deep magenta with a fully opaque creme finish. it’s got shine, is insanely comfortable to wear, and doesn’t feather or wander. i love the impact that this makes – the perfect evening lip.

shy (sheer warm pink) – this is a rosy tint that’s beautifully bright and leans towards the (in)famous “your lips but better.” i find that this finish is the least interesting in the color department, but it makes a great go-to shade if you’re in the no-makeup mood.

i definitely suggest you give these a test the next time you’re at sephora or the beauty counters, and i won’t be at all surprised if one (or more!) wanders into your basket.

fall beauty updates4

fall favorites

well beauties, it’s definitely fall. i know this because all of a sudden i am confused about what to wear and i find myself breaking out the hand cream. our virginia summers are so humid that fall can feel especially dry and harsh – i notice it everywhere from my lips to my hair, and even in the dryness of my fingernails. this fall i’m looking forward to a few beauty upgrades that will not only keep things hydrated, but also on the forefront of seasonal trends.

stila convertible color in sweet pea, $25 – this all in one from stila adds a sheer tint and a natural glow to cheeks. the fuchsia pink shade called sweet pea is my current favorite. i apply it with a stippling brush to give the illusion of color to my fair skin tone and the creamy formula keeps me looking perfectly radiant, never greasy or dry.

dior addict extreme lipstick in lucky, $31 – more than just a pretty lipstick, this formula from dior has hyaluronic microspheres for the ultimate in moisture and shine. i’m partial to lucky,  a vibrant red-pink that’s not too scary, which serves as the beauty equivalent of liquid courage for me. i can swipe it on without a mirror, knowing that it always looks good.

the blind date bobby pin package from mane message, $8 – these beautiful bobbies add a level of sophistication to my slightly unruly-at-the-moment bob. i can use them to hold strays in place at the base of my ponytail or stack them for a dramatic side part. best of all, the combination of gold, mint, and coal goes with everything i own!

maybelline color show nail color in tenacious teal, $2.97 – a $3 nailpolish, what could you possibly have to lose? these lacquers from maybelline are bold and shiny, with a chip-resistent finish that comes in colors that just don’t quit. i’m loving tenacious teal for its stunning opaque finish and perfectly trend-right tones.

ilia mascara in nightfall, $26 – the formula is lighter than air, the color is blacker than black, and the brush is quite possibly the coolest. the clump-free formula delivers beautifully tapered lashes and the double-sided brush allows me to go for coverage on the first coat with the short side and crazy length on coat two with the longer bristles. LOVE.

tory burch eau de parfum, $82 – a new season obviously calls for a new scent and i’ve fallen prey to tory burch’s very first fragrance. it’s equal parts girly and elusively masculine, with top notes of peony (my favorite!) and tuberose fading in to citrusy grapefruit. besides my love of the scent, could the bottle look any more gorgeous on my dresser?

simple replenishing rich moisturizer, $12.99 – nothing is more necessary to update in the cooler months than my moisturizer. this version from simple is rich enough to hydrate my drying skin, but does not clog my pores or feel greasy. it has a gel-like texture that soaks right in and serves as the perfect canvas for my favorite cc cream.

rediscovering a few old favorites5

old favorites

*

on sundays i do a weekly purge of the glossarie stash and archives. i move things from the “to be tested drawer” to my makeup basket, from my makeup basket to my “keep” drawer or into my donation bags. (everyone who comes over is forced to pillage and take what they wish. i’m also known to bring the bag to lunch dates and happy hours – it’s vicious.) inventory control is a major process, but i find that as i’m working through it each week, i discover new obsessions and i always find a few neglected old friends.

this week, i found four former glossarie favorites that i was so excited to rediscover. i promptly put all of them on as my face of the day, and popped them straight into the keep drawer.

stila countless color pigments in lyric, $22 – i discovered this at south moon under and it quickly became my go-to blush shade through the summer months. technically an eyeshadow, the light pink / peach combination has turned out to be a flattering cheek shade that i keep coming back to. (warning: go very light on the touch or you will look scary.)

make up for ever hd invisible cover foundation, $42nicole brought this foundation into my life nearly two years ago and it is still a favorite for photo shoot and event days. my skin just takes really well to it and i’m left with that no-makeup flawlessness that serves as the perfect canvas for the rest of my makeup. i love the perfect application and the long-wearing performance.

clinique bottom lash mascara, $10 – we’ve talked about it twice now, but i still cannot get enough of this stuff. something about that teensy brush and the gorgeous, smudge-proof formula makes it one of my all time favorites for going on three years. the look is long and fluttery, without a single missed lash. i’m partial to the black/brown shade because you can swipe it through your eyebrows in a pinch to fill things in.

soap & glory a great kisser in juicy peach, $10 – this one was found in the pages of lucky magazine and it is still a popular lip balm choice for me. it’s got a sweet peach flavor, a slight coral tint, and a tackiness to it that makes it adhere to my lips and lock in moisture. it feels amazing (hydrating, soothing), but it also makes my lips look shiny and full. and you know how much i love something that looks as good as it performs.

have you recently rediscovered an old beauty favorite?
