rollerball round up6

rollerballs + perfume oils

yesterday i sparked a little twitter conversation about where people apply their perfume. i’m a crook of the elbow kind of girl (i love the way that i get wafts of scent all day long, even if i’m wearing long sleeves) but responses really ran the gamut. some of the most popular choices were classic inner wrist, nape of the neck and hair, backs of the knees, and behind the ears. as i got to thinking about trying to get perfume on the backs of my knees (tricky tricky!), and with such targeted points of application being popular, i quickly realized that a perfume oil (preferably with a rollerball) is really the only way to go. you get a much more condensed concentration of fragrance and it’s a dream to apply and travel with. i have a few new favorites in the perfume oil / rollerball category with rosie jane’s new tilly rising above the rest as my declared scent of spring and summer.

rosie jane tilly perfume oil, $39: absolutely gorgeous! smells like summer but definitely appropriate to be worn year-round. this is the sister fragrance to my signature scent – top notes are grapefruit, gardenia and a hint of pineapple.

l’occitane pivoine flora eau de toilette roll-on, $22: purely peony thanks to extract sourced directly from the south of france. i absolutely love the simplicity of this scent that captures the essence of one of my very favorite flowers.

mcmc love perfume oil, $45: i am obsessed with this brooklyn brand! basil and gunpowder make this the most unique fragrance of the bunch. its citrusy spice is intense and long-lasting.

lurk perfume oil prj v1, $52: discovered at anthropologie, lurk calls soho home. prj v1 (named after the first letters in its three main ingredients) layers rose, jasmine and petitgrain (from the the leaves and green twigs of the bitter orange plant) for a raw floral experience.

do you prefer a perfume oil or a traditional eau de toilette?
do you use a roller ball or a spray bottle (or a solid)?

march bag + balm0

march bag + balm

*

bag: sonia kashuk yarn print double zip clutch, $14.99
balm: sonia kashuk moisture luxe tinted lip balm in hint of pink, $8.99

i am dy-ing over the spring collection from sonia kashuk. we are talking brand new packaging across the board, tons of new products at incredible price points and pretty, pretty color as far as the eye can see. i love when such an accessible brand gets it so right and sonia has nailed every single spring trend.

the bag combines two of my favorite silhouettes – a dome shape and a double zip. the dome shape is ideal for stashing makeup of varying shapes and sizes and the double zip means that you can keep tools and product separate if that’s your game. then there’s the matter of the shiny gold hardware, the contrast trim and the yellow patent zipper pulls – not a detail was missed.

as for the balm, i think “balm” is a negotiable word here. this gorgeously pigmented lippie is more of a super sleek and hydrating lipstick. the tint is powerful, almost opaque, but the balm-like formula means your lips are lush and happy (no dried out weirdness).

the absolute best part about this pairing is that you can scoop it up at your local target and the total cost is under $25. (i don’t know if you’ve been doing the math, but that’s about as much as i tend to spend on one lip product at sephora or the department store counters.)

nyx wonder pencil2

NYX-Wonder-Pencil

what if i told you that for less than $5 i could solve at least three pesky beauty problems?

the new nyx wonder pencil is a nude multitasker that comes in three shades. the beauty of this pencil is that the unique hybrid formula means that it serves a variety of purposes. it’s softer than a typical eyeliner and more matte than a regular stick concealer. in short, it’s like a tiny magic wand that can be used to lighten, brighten, and conceal the different areas of your face.

for example, it serves as a perfect eyeliner at the water line to brighten my eyes. the slim pencil shape and fine point mean that i can also use it as the most precise blemish concealer ever. it’s as if i’ve got a little magic eraser and i can just dot it over any spots left peeking through after i have applied my foundation, without the need to blend – genius! it’s come in handy as a reverse lip liner to keep my bright lip shades from feathering and i’ve also used it under my arches to add shape and definition to my brows.

this is one of those products that you’ll wonder how you ever lived without. i feel as though i’m discovering new ways to use it daily, and there’s nothing better than that.

sometimes skin needs a little something extra. if your skin is generally well-behaved, kiss your gene pool and consider yourself a lucky lady. as for the rest of us, the struggle to maintain clarity can be a real source of stress and anxiety. i recently discovered beautyrx skincare and i am highly impressed by their collection. dermatologist dr. schultz has created a line of products based on chemical exfoliation using glycolic acid. chemical exfoliation has been known to improve all kinds of skin concerns – from dark spots, to texture issues, and even clogged pores that lead to acne. glycolics can be too harsh for some skin types when used daily, but i have found the beautyrx products to be tweaked the exact right amount for me.

by answering these quick questions, i received a recommendation for the balancing cleanser and the essential solar defense lotion. the cleanser is creamy and lightweight, perfect for removing the day’s makeup and for prepping skin in the morning. your skin feels completely clean, but not stripped and it has truly helped to clear my skin. the essential solar defense lotion can be used on face and body. it spreads easily, dries quickly and since it’s oil-free it’s also non-greasy and won’t clog pores.

this pair of products has changed my skin for the better! if you’re looking to make a change in your skincare routine and need to call in the experts, dr. schultz’s beautyrx is a quality solution.

it cosmetics ultra repair liquid oxygen foundation2

it cosmetics oxygen foundation

i’m very picky about what goes on my face, because breathe on it wrong and i’m suffering a massive breakout. i’m always skeptical about foundation and i’m intensely particular about formula and what something feels like when it goes onto my skin. when it cosmetics’ new ultra repair liquid oxygen foundation arrived, i had high hopes because there is a lot of buzz about oxygen-infused products and how great they are for your skin. your skin cells (and all of your cells, really) require oxygen to metabolize and boosting the oxygen level can give you more youthful, glowing skin.

this foundation goes on the most smooth of any other that i have found. it looks and feels like second skin – absolutely weightless. your face is left looking dewy with minor imperfections completely blurred away. normally with a foundation, i love the way that it looks or i love the way that it feels on my face, but rarely both. in this case, you get the best of both worlds plus amazing skincare benefits. the formula includes hyaluronic acid to keep skin supple (especially helpful in winter), it contains anti-aging ingredients like peptides (to plump and hydrate skin), hydrolyzed collagen (to help fight fine lines and wrinkles), and niacin (which minimizes pigmentation).

i will also note that adding the ultra repair liquid oxygen foundation to my regular routine and making no other changes to my skincare, i have noticed a real difference in my skin health and clarity. it’s calmer and much more clear – improvements that i can fully attribute to oxygen. if you’re skin is picky and you’re in the market for a new foundation, this is an incredible and innovative option.

julep totally nails it4

julep totally nails it

*

i say it all the time, but i love brands that do one thing really well. they know who they are and they have a focused expertise in one area that usually means every single one of their products is of the utmost quality. for hands and nails, that brand is julep. if you’ve been reading this blog for a long while, you might remember this post. well, let’s just say they’ve come a long way. the brand has expanded to include over 150 shades of their signature polish and they’ve launched a monthly box subscription program called maven. while i will always look to julep as the cutting edge in color, it’s their innovative and advanced treatments that keep me coming back for more.

mighty nail and cuticle serum, $28 – just like the best serum does for your skin, this treatment improves the health and appearance of nails when applied at their roots (your cuticles)

oxygen nail treatment, $18 – this is your foundation. dubbed “nail makeup” oxygen hides little imperfections, provides a subtle gloss, and works to improve the strength and smoothness of your nail beds.

hand and cuticle stick, $22 – leaves hands silky soft without making them greasy, all in one twist up stick

freedom polymer top coat, $18 – a mini force field, this quick dry, gel like top coat extends the life of your mani yet comes off with any polish remover

have you tried any of these treatments? think you’ll add one to your mani mix?

beautyaddicts showoff mascara0

beauty-addicts-showoff-mascara-0-39-oz-500x500

my lash look varies depending on the day. some days, i want crazy volume and plushness that’s all drama and sass, and some days i want natural looking, clump-free length that looks like its growing right out of my very own lids. the latter look is more what i go for on an everyday basis and for an everyday mascara, beautyaddicts showoff is really giving me the goods. that curved brush is shaped perfectly to my eye, catching every lash and delivering awesome curl without the use of a lash curler. my ho-hum, nothing special lashes are lengthened without a single clump and i’m left batting fringe that fools even me. now, there are lots of mascaras out there that look great right after application but that start to show their true colors as the day wears on. the true test of a mascara for me is one that holds its shape and length without flaking or smudging, even on my bottom shelf. (note: there are very few mascaras that live up to their claims of not smudging. very. few.) to challenge this mascara further, my naturally (for whatever reason) watery eyes tend to push things to the limit. i’ve been wearing this mascara for a straight week now and i’m almost sad to take it off at night – with nothing more than soap and water, thank you very much – because it still looks that pristine after 8+ hours of wear. beyond looks, the addition of argan oil makes this a formula that’s very easy to wear for long periods of time without irritating my eyes. you get a fabulous fan of feathered fringe and that’s something you just can’t put a price on.

my interview with mark. brand ambassador ashley greene4

ashley greene

last wednesday, i had the pleasure of attending a congressional briefing to announce data from the “no more” study. mark. brand ambassador ashley greene joined advocates on the hill to share sobering statistics related to attitudes toward, and experience with dating abuse, partner violence, and sexual assault among teens and young adults. the results clearly underscore the need to educate young people so that they recognize the signs of abuse and how to safely intervene to help end it. ashley also announced that m.powerment by mark. will award 25 new grants totaling $125,000 to expand its healthy relationship college program which helps students recognize the warning signs and encourages them to actively step-in as bystanders to prevent and stop violence before it starts.

after the briefing, ashley and i sat down to chat about m.powerment by mark. and a few burning beauty topics. we covered everything from self confidence to our shared befuddlement over why guys always tend to get the longest lashes. i walked away completely inspired by ashley’s dedication to the m.powerment cause and with a true envy of her poise and strong sense of self.

why is it so important to spread the m.powerment message and raise awareness about dating abuse and partner violence?

for me, it was sobering to hear the statistics that 1 in 4 women between the ages of 15 and 22 have experienced dating abuse or violence or they know someone who has. it’s something that needs to be addressed and hopefully it impacts other people as much as it has me. a really big part of stopping this dating abuse and violence is allowing these young girls to understand that it is ok to speak out. there are places that they can go and people they can talk to; if you’re somebody’s friend that it’s ok for you to speak to them and be there for them. we also want it to be preventative. i think a lot of people just don’t know the warning signs that could essentially stop this in its tracks before it even happens.

you talk a lot about using your celebrity power for the greater good, which i love. can you touch on what supporting this cause means to you and how it plays into your greater role?

my job is great and it does have its ups and its downs, but one of the really big ups is that i am able to help other people. it’s important to me especially because when i was younger, i didn’t have that self-confidence and luckily i had a mother who really instilled that in me. she has always said to me that she thinks i have the power to change the world and i should use it. that was very empowering and it’s important that i pass that on. i’ve been given this wonderful gift of being able to help people. so, i’m going to – as best i can.

one of the themes running through the m.powerment campaign is the importance of self-confidence. besides your mom, is there anywhere else that you draw confidence from or people who you turn to when you need a boost?

i have worked really hard to surround myself with people who love me through my ups and my downs – because everyone has them. you need people that are going to support you when you are down. i also recently started telling myself things that i love about myself everyday along with the things that i love about the people that i’ve surrounded myself with. it’s easy to put yourself down; it’s harder to bring yourself back up.

you have had the opportunity to work with some of the best hair and makeup talent in the business. have you picked up any tips and tricks that you work into your own stuff?

i have learned a lot from sitting in the mirror and watching these people perform their magic. for me less is more. in my teenage years, i was trying to look older, and now that i’m starting to get a little older i have realized that it’s just better to play up what you’ve been given rather than try and cover it up. that’s another part of being confident – loving yourself and what you’ve been given.

what’s your favorite facial feature to play up?

i love lashes. there is something so glamorous about having really thick, full lashes! and it always seems like it’s the men who are born with them. i probably wouldn’t wear makeup if I had those natural lashes that went on for days.

if we were to peek inside your clutch, what would i find in your #lipbomb?

mark. gloss gorgeous lip click is one of my favorites. i like it because it stains a little bit and it’s not tacky. the new lip crayons are also great. they don’t dry your lips out. the color payoff is true to what you see in the stick and they’re very rich. honestly, if i’m not wearing one of those, then it’s petroleum jelly – just to keep my lips hydrated, especially with all of my travel.

what are some of your other mark. favorites?

the make it go away makeup removing wipes. when i fly, i don’t like wearing a face full of makeup so they are one of the staples in my bag. i like got the goods foundation a lot, too. i’m really picky about what i put on my face because i try and keep it pretty clear.

endless thanks to the mark. team for including me in such an important and memorable day! you can click here to learn more about m.powerment by mark. and shop products that support the cause.
