sheswai winesnob + awesome0

new sheswai lacquer for fall 2012

*

if the weather won’t allow me to tuck my toes into my new boots quite yet, at the very least i can give myself a moody autumn mani. my color of choice of the moment is sheswai’s winesnob and the dark and lovely blackberry is everything that my nails are begging for this season. my favorite formula remains flawless and easy to apply for ten perfect and very vampy new accessories. i’m topping things off with awesome, a new high-shine and shatter-proof top coat to ensure that this deep jelly red doesn’t go anywhere anytime soon.

(but if it does, i’m going to work a little bit of this magic, because…well, it’s genius and why haven’t i thought of that before?!)

sheswai winesnob and awesome are available online for $16 each. happy fall!

pacifica island vanilla solid perfume3

sweet and sultry, this new solid perfume from pacifica is better than your average vanilla thanks to inspiration from the islands and a touch of tahitian spice. as a long-time bestseller for pacifica, i’m thrilled to see island vanilla in this perfectly simple and affordable solid form. it’s adorably portable and refreshingly natural (little known fact: solid perfumes are made with far fewer ingredients than liquid – and they are often clean things like beeswax, shea butter, and essential oils), plus the solid makes it ideal for layering. i’m loving the unexpected warmth and girliness that it’s bringing to my early fall days.

note: perfumes and scents are the toughest things to review. i try desperately to bring them to life, but i know that it’s nearly impossible to choose one based on a written description. well, pacifica has solved the problem: their top 17 scents are now available in .1 oz solid perfume samples for just $2 each, making fragrance shopping practically foolproof. you get plenty of product to test and their tiny size makes them great for traveling. shop the full range here and sample away!

september bag + balm4

september bag + balm

bag: sonia kashuk completely organized, $14.99
balm: maybelline baby lips in quenched, $2.99

this months’ pairing certainly won’t break the bank, ringing in at under $20 for the duo. while a low price is an attractive selling point, we all know that it can be tough to suss out quality products in the drugstore aisles and $2.99 is no bargain if the product is just going to end up in your beauty graveyard. fear not, my budget beauties, for this month’s bag is going to last you a lifetime and this month’s balm is one that you’ll surely be purchasing over and over.

sonia kashuk’s new completely organized nylon cosmetic bag is a far cry from her normal prints and patterns, but basic black has never looked better. the bag features a large interior compartment with seven slip pockets of varying sizes and an interior zip. the slips are perfect for bottles and blushes and the zip begs to collect your bobbies and hair ties. the exterior front zip pocket is the perfect place to stow your brushes and there are even five additional slip pockets on the outside (including one biggie behind that front zip). i’m convinced that this bag does everything short of applying your makeup for you and the best part is that you can toss it right into the wash when you experience that inevitable leak or spill.

in balm land, i’m way late to the maybelline baby lips party. i don’t know why it took me so long to make the $3 leap, but a feature in nylon’s beauty pages had me rushing to pick one up. it’s hydrating and much less addicting than most balms, meaning that a few applications a day replace your every-hour routine. the balm feels soft and light on your lips with a sweet lemon scent and spf20. not sure you can beat that for the super friendly price tag!

jouer essential matte touch0

it’s not feeling so september-y in virginia these days, and until the temps dip below 80 degrees, i’m going to be prone to shiny face. while me and the gland gods duke it out over that one, at least i’ve found a simple solution in jouer’s essential matte touch.

my most contentious areas are the creases on the sides of my nose, the dip between my bottom lip and my chin, and the pesky upside down triangle between my brows. the glow is apparent immediately after applying moisturizer and doesn’t disappear with the application of makeup. to combat this little problem, i’ve taken to dabbing matte touch on my trouble spots and shine is zapped completely without the need for powder or blotting papers. my makeup glides smoothly over the places where i apply and the result is a flawless face. this is a weapon of shiny mass destruction, a new and all-too valuable asset in my beauty arsenal.

if you need to keep your oil in control, jouer’s essential matte touch is a must. grab your own here for $26.

theBALM stainiac12

’tis the season for boots, pumpkin spice, and dark, stormy manicures, but i still have trouble saying goodbye to my cherished summer glow. enter, thebalm staniac. this lip and cheek tint (discovered thanks to birchbox) is the perfect product to help hang onto that sunkissed look long into the chillier months.

i tried beauty queen, a light, sheer berry tint. one swipe on the apple of each cheek leaves you looking fresh for daytime, or dab it on a few times for a more dramatic look. bonus: for a night out, i like to add nars the multiple orgasm on top for extra shimmer.

the best part about this product is that you really have to layer it to get a lot of color, so there’s no danger in looking like a clown on your first attempt, even if you’re heavy-handed.

keep your pretty flush for fall: buy staniac online here.

metallic nails were all over the spring ’13 runways, but you don’t have to wait until next year to sport the trend. whether you prefer to dabble in an array of nontoxic shades a la priti polish or you choose to commit to one (or more!) full size bottles of essie’s new mirror metallics collection, the brands are bringing lots of options for you to experiment with. the one theme that rings clear is that shades from silver to gold, copper and even blue are all appropriate ways to add high shine to your fingertips.

clinique black honey lip duo9

the most universal lip color in america is so trend-right for fall. with burgundy and oxblood everything turning up everywhere, wine-stained lips are going to be the season’s most achievable and buzzed about beauty look. i already knew that i’d be turning to my favorite black honey to get my bordeaux on, but when i popped into sephora for a new tube, i discovered this limited-edition, double-ended update. the lip duo features clinique’s iconic almost lipstick in black honey and a coordinating long last glosswear spf15 (not available elsewhere). when layered together, the two bring fall’s greatest lip trend to life: a bitten dark berry that is to die for.

clinique’s black honey lip duo, $21 is limited edition and exclusive to sephora.

i’ve found my ‘slap-it-on’ lip color for fall! what’s yours?

murad hydro-dynamic ultimate moisture0

fall is upon us, beauties, and a change in the air means a necessary change in the skincare routine. i don’t know about you, but the first day without humidity and my skin is dryer and tighter than it is through the warmer months. for everyone, but especially those of us who are blemish-prone, finding the optimal moisture level is essential to healthy skin. normally one to avoid, a rich heavy moisturizer, i was a little skeptical of murad’s new skin quencher, but the claims seemed too good not to give it a try.

the formula is designed to lock in optimal moisture levels for up to eight hours, meaning that regardless of your skin type, this stuff will help keep things comfortable and smooth. although it’s a heavier moisturizer, the technology behind it it keeps your oil glands from working overtime so that it actually combats shine and blemishes by calming and caring for skin in the best way possible. you’ll feel the hydration immediately and you will be amazed at how long that feeling lasts. murad has mastered the balance between a lotion that’s intensive but lightweight.

the formula is super concentrated so you only need the tiniest amount to cover your entire face (meaning: this jar might last you a lifetime, although it’s only 1.7 ounces). after a week of use, my insanely sensitive skin has been handling this stuff like a dream which is a true testament to its gentleness and development by dermatologists. in fact, i think it’s improved my skin texture and clarity, overall. hooray!

if you’re already on the hunt for your winter moisturizer, i would urge you to give this one a try. it’s full priced at $65, but you can snap it up as part of murad’s hydrate for hope set for $49.50.

old faithful: tweezerman slant6

i take better care of my brows than i do my car. they are a source of pride and i’m obsessed with keeping them in perfect shape. as i hopped out of the shower this morning and plucked a few stray hairs, it dawned on me how long i’ve been relying on my favorite tweezers. i bought them the summer between my freshman and sophomore college years (when i was still flying home for haircuts and brow waxings – dedication, people), meaning our partnership has been going a whopping 11 years strong. i have tested so many other options over the years, thinking that things must have advanced in the tweezer department through the decade, but i keep returning to these. they grab on the first pinch, painlessly pluck the tiniest of hairs, and make it so easy for me to keep my arches under control. i’ll be sad if these suckers ever leave me – because let’s face it, there’s a better chance of me losing them than there is of them wearing out.

grab your own tweezermans here – it’s the best $22 you’ll ever spend.

note: technically the set pictured is the tweezerman professional tweezerette which might still be available at some pro beauty locations if you keep your eyes peeled!
